In an emergency you could probably do it by yourself though. I noticed 20 years ago that a lot of my contemporaries had no idea how to repair their own cars or do basic carpentry/plumbing/electrical work. If my generation didn’t know how to do it their kids certainly don’t know how.

When I was living in the city I noticed and interesting thing in my social group. More women were handy and interested in learning basic things like this then the men. It was an interesting flip in traditional gender roles. I don’t want to get too cliche about the whole thing but I found that what would happen if something broke in a multi-gendered household, the men would be the first to suggested calling someone and the women if they didn’t know would get a book or go on the internet to get directions on how to fix it.
