The Palin pick cut the legs from under McCain most potent argument against Obama.

It did take away the lack of experience arguement, but he got a Sarah surge & went up 4 points on BHO.
Two things happened, that insolent beyouch Tina Fey made Palin a laughing stock & the banking crisis broke.
As big as anything though, McCain was an annoying, weak candidate.
