Pre-19th Amendment. It wasn’t until some website raised the issue during the Weinstein coverage that I noticed it, but this seems like part of the “they are our wives and daughters and sisters” thing. It is, possibly subconsciously, a failure to recognize the humanity of women. It should be enough that women are, shockingly enough, people.
