Correct me if I’m wrong, but Taliban will take any chance to kill American soldiers, even without an excuse.

Also, anyone who wants to call themselves “Taliban” can do so (like “Anonymous”), and any yahoo can claim responsibility for anything. In lots of cases it’s local thugs trying to make a name for themselves in their ‘hood.
