Who is going to buy the land? Nevada has a population just short of 3 million. And two million of those people live in Clark County (which is where Vegas is).

This isn’t like the government is sitting on thirty acres in the middle of a major metropolitan area. This is hundreds of square miles of desert that nobody is going to want.

Not true. There’s thousands of square miles of land throughout the West (or Nevada in particular) that would be exploited for mineral resources or treated as ranchers’ private domains - there’s a tie-in with the Bundy nuts as well.

They think that the land should belong to the states (and sold off piecemeal - in reality in huge chunks - to corporate interests that will exploit the heck out of the land).

Cruz is pandering to these folks, but he’s in a position to gut BLM/Interior Department oversight by cutting funding, and should he become president, I’d expect him to slash and burn the EPA and other federal land protections. It’d be another shifting of burdens from the rich on to everyone else - they’d obtain the land at dirt cheap prices, and everyone else would be screwed by the consequences for generations to come.
