Donald Trump Isn’t Telling the Truth About Opposing the Iraq War

Imagine my surprise
Politics • Views: 47,797

You know how one of Donald Trump’s constant talking points is that he was opposed to the Iraq War from the start? For one example of many, in the New Hampshire debate recently, Trump said, “I’m the only one up here, when the war of Iraq… in Iraq, I was the one that said, ‘Don’t go, don’t do it, you’re going to destabilize the Middle East.’”

How surprised would you be to learn that Trump isn’t telling the truth about his supposed opposition to the war?

In 2002, Donald Trump Said He Supported Invading Iraq.

In the interview, which took place on Sept. 11, 2002, [Howard] Stern asked Trump directly if he was for invading Iraq.

“Yeah, I guess so,” Trump responded. “I wish the first time it was done correctly.”

SoundCloud

Buzzfeed’s Andrew Kaczynski also points out that Trump made similar statements about supporting a war in Iraq in a book published in 2000:

Trump’s comments on Stern are more in line with what he wrote in his 2000 book, The America We Deserve, where he advocated for a “principled and tough” policy toward “outlaw” states like Iraq.

“We still don’t know what Iraq is up to or whether it has the material to build nuclear weapons. I’m no warmonger,” Trump wrote. “But the fact is, if we decide a strike against Iraq is necessary, it is madness not to carry the mission to its conclusion. When we don’t, we have the worst of all worlds: Iraq remains a threat, and now has more incentive than ever to attack us.”

It’s important to note that Donald Trump has been lying constantly about many, many things (and he isn’t the only GOP candidate to do so), but this may be one of the most egregious examples.

How can you tell Trump’s lying? It’s a day ending in Y.

Every utterance and statement comes with an expiration date, and his so-called perfect memory is anything but. Take the whole nonsensical statements made about cutting annual prescription drug costs:

Yet his supporters don’t care at all what he says or does. It’s as though he’s gone full metal hypnotoad on them and they wont do anything but mindlessly support him.

But if you think Trump’s alone in this, you’d be mistaken. The GOP candidates are breathtaking in their lies and smears (see Cruz crudely photo editing an image of Rubio shaking hands with Obama over some deal).

I know a lot of people are trying to make a big deal about 4 words spoken off-the-cuff, in response to the biggest of all radio-jocks, but I think this is a case of trying to pin the tail on the donkey using too small a pin.

This is happening because the major media companies are too afraid to really confront what the Trump phenomenon is all about, so now the game has moved to “gotcha”, digging as deep as possible into print or audio or video archives.

Again - this is symptomatic of avoiding the real problem with Trumpism.

The real problem with Trumpism is namely this: Donald Trump is exploiting disguised, or latent, bigotry to fuel a campaign based entirely on the emotions of hate and fear.

The obvious thing for Cruz to do is to fire back at Trump and say (correctly) that the only thing Trump worships is money.

However, this is unlikely to happen since the Republican party is full of self-proclaimed Christians who only worship money.

Ahistorical nuts running for the White House on the GOP line - take (aw heck, I’ve run out of numbers):

Carson seems to forget that Christians had no problems with either the murder of Jews (Holocaust, pogroms, etc.,) or slavery (and Christians repeatedly cited the Bible as justification for slavery here in the US right up and through the War of Southern Insurrection.

Christians did all manner of barbaric acts during the Crusades (which was a ~200 year campaign to retake the Holy Land and unify European and Western Asian lands under the power of the papacy). Included in the Crusades are Christians sacking Constantinople in 1204, which was home of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Of course, that was preceded by the Eastern Orthodox massacring the Roman Catholics.

No, Bundy and his band of armed domestic terrorists are welfare queens at heart. They want something for nothing, and if you don’t allow them that right, they’re going to go all bang bang on you or others (especially law enforcement).

Who is going to buy the land? Nevada has a population just short of 3 million. And two million of those people live in Clark County (which is where Vegas is).

I wonder how many times Trump has sued someone for malicious prosecution or abuse of process? And how much his attorney’s charged him for that. Those are not claims you bring lightly, as an attorney - also, the bar is set incredibly high on them, it’s not just “oh, you won the last case so now you can sue” there has to be a finding that the original claims lacked merit.

Political Public Spokes-Catholics are funny that way.

Their positions on abortion, gays, contraception, are “deep-seated beliefs of my faith, it’s unconscionable to ask me to go against the teachings of my church.”

But when it comes to immigration, universal health care, food stamps, the death penalty, “I would never let my religious beliefs interfere with the responsibilities of my job. It’s religious persecution to even suggest such thing.”

Not true. There’s thousands of square miles of land throughout the West (or Nevada in particular) that would be exploited for mineral resources or treated as ranchers’ private domains - there’s a tie-in with the Bundy nuts as well.

They think that the land should belong to the states (and sold off piecemeal - in reality in huge chunks - to corporate interests that will exploit the heck out of the land).

Cruz is pandering to these folks, but he’s in a position to gut BLM/Interior Department oversight by cutting funding, and should he become president, I’d expect him to slash and burn the EPA and other federal land protections. It’d be another shifting of burdens from the rich on to everyone else - they’d obtain the land at dirt cheap prices, and everyone else would be screwed by the consequences for generations to come.

More on Affluenza jerk, Ethan Couch, moving to adult court:
nbcnews.com

Couch faces jail time for possibly violating his probation after causing a car wreck that claimed the lives of four people and injured nine others.

The move to adult court means Couch could be sentenced to 120 days in jail if it’s found he violated his 10-year probation, which runs through 2024. If he were to violate his probation again, he could be sentenced to 10 years in prison per each crash victim.

Is it bad that I’m routing for him to violate the terms of his probation again?

Tonya Couch has been charged with hindering apprehension of her son, which carries a 10-year prison sentence. Her bond was set at $75,000 with the requirement that she wear an ankle monitor.

Absolutely true.

Basically, Idaho would have to strip its forests bare to recoup the costs. Failing that, it would cost money that the state doesn’t have.

And then the state would have to incur all the wildfire protection/prevention costs as well.
