+1 for the goat idea. But I would not use any rim fire for anything other than if he got into squirrel or rabbit hunting.

Now a good 12 gauge is always appropriate too. I like side by sides but you can find pumps dirt cheap.

My brother and I dropped deer with a single-shot .22 when we were teens…(we kind of made up our own hunting season a few times…mom complained, then helped butcher the deer).
