I’ve gotten the impression that the major horseraces are mainly for the event/gathering itself and less about the actual race. Had co-workers who would go to the Preakness every year, and all they talked about after coming back was the party and drinking.
I’ve been to the Derby infield three times. It’s more an exercise in cultural anthropology than in watching the races. The infield is wall to wall people in various stages of inebriation and undress, despite efforts to clean things up over the years, and the only way to see the horses is to force your way through the crowd to the inside fence.
