Without drainage, salts will build up in the soil, meaning you will need to replant, probably annually.

So if you are using a non-draining tray, cover the lower inch or so with pea gravel.

You did not mention temps. But if you have that much sunlight you might as well grow some vine tomatoes.

Tomatoes are a good idea, it gets hot out there in the summer. I’m not totally against drain holes, I’ll just want to find a way to protect the wood table from the drainage. Grainger sent an extra pair of legs for the workbench I ordered for the garage remodel project so I built it up using a 30” x 60” hardwood top and coated it with Thompson’s water seal. I will have to re-coat it every year or two so I’ll probably just replant the box at the same time.
