You cover your head if you’re a female visiting a mosque, no matter the reason— just like men cover their heads when visiting a synagogue, and women visiting Catholic churches used to have to cover their heads.

Hence the hat, which is part of the normal uniform. When I was a child, covering your head in a Catholic church could be something as simple as a barrette and applied only in the sanctuary, not the offices, school or elsewhere on church property. Likewise, I believe the yarmulke is only worn in worship, not for visiting the rabbi in his office. (I’d appreciate confirmation or correction from one of our Jewish lizards.) In this case, Muslims are demanding special concessions from the police, particularly the female officers, in a way that diminishes the officers’ authority. I stand by what I said.
