I’ve heard that story as well, with an elderly Polish lady being the central character. It could be more than just an apocryphal tale. I first heard that tale here, from my ex-wife. In her version of the story, it happened in 1946.

Been digging into the history of our town’s temple. They got their important Torah scroll in the 1940’s, originally from a Breslau synagogue destroyed on Kristalnacht.
