The overwhelming majority of those targeted by Islamist terrorists like al Qaeda have been fellow Muslims. It’s part target of opportunity, and part of strategy to cow the majority into subservience and obedience to the Islamists.

Yep, I read about it pretty much every day, thanks to my Google alerts. Most of the stories don’t even make it to the (US) national news.
