Glenn does not speak for the voters. The voters speak for themselves. He had better get used to that.

A new study published Monday by the University of New Mexico confirmed that the name of the Washington Redskins is only offensive if you take any amount of time whatsoever to think about its actual meaning. “When you hear or say ‘Redskins’ in the abstract, it’s completely harmless, but we’ve discovered that if you briefly pause to remember it’s a racial slur for an indigenous group wiped out by genocide over the course of a few centuries, then, yeah, it’s awful,” said lead researcher Lawrence Wagner,

It’s just a matter of time before Weiner collapses—he’s allegedly in 4th place now, but he probably still has money to spend. That should dry up soon, though.

This is a good thing. Cory Booker is really smart, pro-science, forward thinking, not prone to self-aggrandizing exaggerations, a very good Democratic candidate.

Holt came in 3rd, in spite of or because of Glenn appearing at his town hall meeting?

Pallone would have been my choice if that was my state.

Greenwald said that the government would be unwise to arrest them, because of the bad publicity it would create. It also wouldn’t stop the flow of information.

Greenwald said, half-jokingly, that if he was arrested, WikiLeaks would become the new traffic cop for publishing N.S.A. documents. “I would just say: ‘O.K., let me introduce you to my friend Julian Assange, who’s going to take my place. Have fun dealing with him.’

He laughed and pointed out that unfortunately, the government does not always take the smartest course of action. “If they were smart,” he said, “I would do it.”

18 austin_blue  Tue, Aug 13, 2013 6:17:47pm

Like the quickly receding Edward Snowden, who is being sucked into a Dacha-shaped black hole in the news cycle, The GG has backed another losing horse.

While the reality-based community knew that Booker was fundamentally unbeatable in this race, The GG slogged on toward the inevitability of irrelevancy.

As penance, The GG should publicly get on all fours and lick a dog’s ass until it bleeds, such that he provides some parting entertainment as he fades and disappears from a public who is quickly losing interest in someone so shallow and vain and petty.

Thus speaketh the chortling a_b.

CNN puts hate group leader on TV and he predictably insults transgender man

Randy Thomasson, the head of a group that opposes LGBT rights, made sure to insult a transgender man after being invited on television by CNN.

“Thomasson’s attempt to disrespect my own gender identity by referring to me as a ‘lady’ said more about him than me (I’m no lady, and clearly he is no gentleman),” Masen Davis, the Executive Director of the Transgender Law Center, told Raw Story. “I am comfortable in my own skin, and proud of my journey as a transgender man. I have heard, though, from many transgender people and allies who are very upset by his shallow attempt to mis-gender me. Failing to honor the gender identity of a transgender person is a common way for anti-equality zealots to try to undermine our credibility and humanity.”

Thomasson, the president of SaveCalifornia.com, appeared alongside Davis on CNN Tuesday afternoon to discuss California’s new transgender student rights law.

Thomasson claimed that “sexual indoctrination laws” in California endangered children and that transgender individuals were simply confused. As CNN host Brooke Baldwin was wrapping up the debate, Thomasson drove his point home by remarking, “Hey, good to talk to you ladies.”

Media Matters reported that Thomasson had a history of making inflammatory statements on LGBT issues. The Southern Poverty Law Center considers SaveCalifornia.com to be a hate group.

Here’s the part where Greenwald became a hero to the Brazilian people
(//):

nytimes.com

As dusk fell one evening, I followed Poitras and Greenwald to the newsroom of O Globo, one of the largest newspapers in Brazil. Greenwald had just published an article there detailing how the N.S.A. was spying on Brazilian phone calls and e-mails. The article caused a huge scandal in Brazil, as similar articles have done in other countries around the world, and Greenwald was a celebrity in the newsroom. The editor in chief pumped his hand and asked him to write a regular column; reporters took souvenir pictures with their cellphones. Poitras filmed some of this, then put her camera down and looked on. I noted that nobody was paying attention to her, that all eyes were on Greenwald, and she smiled. “That’s right,” she said. “That’s perfect.”

re: #11 Charles Johnson

I’m a big fan of Booker, as is my wife. It’s one of the few politicians that we both agree upon. He’s going to be great for the state, which not only needs someone knowledgeable about the issues, but someone who can cheer lead for the state and make sure that the state’s needs are addressed. And he’s going to likely focus on poverty, income inequality, and those are important. I hope he can focus on making sure that the state gets needed infrastructure funding as well - helping cities like Newark upgrade and modernize their water distribution systems, power and utilities, as well as mass transit - all needed to improve competitiveness and mobility. He’s also likely to push for better school access, including vouchers as a way to get schools to improve.

Oh, and the primary today wasn’t even close.

Booker had 57% of the vote in a 4 way election. Holt had 13% at last count, well behind Pallone, but ahead of Oliver.

Holt and Pallone are effective members of Congress, but not in the same league as Booker in charisma and the ability to get people engaged.

On the other side, Lonegan won.

26 lawhawk  Tue, Aug 13, 2013 6:26:53pm

Oh, and Greenwald’s predictive ability is about as strong as his reading comprehension of the NSA slides he’s reported upon. Couldn’t understand that Booker was the presumptive and overwhelming favorite. Couldn’t understand that Booker’s GOTV was superior to those of everyone else in the race. Couldn’t understand that Booker’s combination of intelligence, knowledge about the issues, and ability to relate to folks along with tremendous charisma made him the guy to beat (and he never was behind in any polling in the race - in fact, he was always double digits ahead).

Greenwald engaged in a whole lot of wishful thinking that his support of Holt would change the race. I actually think his endorsement of Holt was as much to keep Greenwald’s name in things as it was in backing Holt on the issues.

I will sound a contrary note here. I plan to vote for Booker against the strange Mr. Lonegan, who’s really, really out there. I am willing to keep an open mind and be happy if Booker does a good job in the Senate.

However, I don’t like Booker at all. He is a big bag of hot air. His major accomplishments have been to be a very successful twitter writer. For me, the essence of Mayor Booker was the rescue of the freezing dog last winter. Mayor Booker showed up to rescue the poor dog. But did he immediately bundle the shivering dog into a police car to get warm and safe? Yes, you say? The obvious thing to do if you’re rescuing a freezing dog would be to….. get it warm?

Oh, please. Let’s get real. This is Cory Booker. So he pulled the dog off the stoop where it was, and stuck the poor thing in the snow so he could get a good picture for his twitter account. Only then, when he got a tweet off with the picture of the shivering dog in the snow, did he let the poor animal get warm.

And this is another reason Booker will be good for the state.

Youtube Video

He’s got a good personal relationship with Gov. Christie - something sorely lacking in the relationship between Christie and Menendez and Lautenberg. While they put aside their differences in trying to secure aid after Sandy, it poisoned the relationships and kept everyone from getting more aid and more federal aid flowing to the state.

re: #21 simoom

Here’s where Greenwald & Poitras broadcast that their agenda:

nytimes.com

The Snowden story, they both said, was a battle they were waging together, a fight against powers of surveillance that they both believe are a threat to fundamental American liberties.

nytimes.com

“It’s an incredible emotional experience,” she said, “to be contacted by a complete stranger saying that he was going to risk his life to expose things the public should know. He was putting his life on the line and trusting me with that burden. My experience and relationship to that is something that I want to retain an emotional relation to.” Her connection to him and the material, she said, is what will guide her work. “I am sympathetic to what he sees as the horror of the world [and] what he imagines could come. I want to communicate that with as much resonance as possible.”

nytimes.com

Poitras, while not nearly as confrontational as Greenwald, disagrees with the suggestion that their work amounts to advocacy by partisan reporters. “Yes, I have opinions,” she told me. “Do I think the surveillance state is out of control? Yes, I do. This is scary, and people should be scared. A shadow and secret government has grown and grown, all in the name of national security and without the oversight or national debate that one would think a democracy would have. It’s not advocacy. We have documents that substantiate it.”

Here’s where Greenwald becomes intoxicated with new-found power:

nytimes.com

Poitras, sitting 20 rows behind Greenwald, occasionally went forward to talk about what he was reading. As the man sitting next to him slept, Greenwald pointed to the FISA order on his screen and asked Poitras: “Have you seen this? Is this saying what I’m thinking it’s saying?”

At times, they talked so animatedly that they disturbed passengers who were trying to sleep; they quieted down. “We couldn’t believe just how momentous this occasion was,” Greenwald said. “When you read these documents, you get a sense of the breadth of them. It was a rush of adrenaline and ecstasy and elation. You feel you are empowered for the first time because there’s this mammoth system that you try and undermine and subvert and shine a light on — but you usually can’t make any headway, because you don’t have any instruments to do it — [and now] the instruments were suddenly in our lap.”

re: #31 thatthatisis

Booker overcame the Sharpe James political machine and not only ended up winning a seat on the city council, but perservered and ended up winning the mayor against James’ handpicked successor. He then got his own slate of candidate onto the city council to help with his agenda in reinvigorating the city.

There’s a lot of work still to be done, but there’s a change in how the city sees itself, and there’s pride where there was once shame and ridicule.

Businesses are starting to come back to Newark, and getting the Prudential Center built helps in some respects. The next step will be building up around the arena and that’s on his agenda.

Crime rates are down since he first took office, but there’s still a way to go.

And the tweets do quite a bit in getting local businesses noticed and encouraging people to visit - whether for a sports event or the Newark Museum (which has an eclectic and interesting collection).

For those looking for a citation about Booker and the dog, I’m afraid I don’t know how to embed. Just google “Booker saves dog”. The pictures the press took (he waiting to save the dog until the press arrived) as they interviewed Booker tell the story. Does the dog look like he’s being put into a warm car? Or do the pictures look more like Booker is holding the dog out in the cold while talking to the press with a concerned look on his face?

I will also be honest and admit that I was upset with Booker for his appearance on Meet The Press (I think it was MTP) when he criticized President Obama while he was an official spokesman for candidate Obama. I thought that was particularly opportunistic to get on the show as an Obama spokesman and use the visibility to further his own political career.

Go ahead and down rate me. I am only speaking my opinion and backing it up with reasons. How horrible of me.

On the questions Poitras won’t answer:

nytimes.com

Greenwald installed encryption software and began communicating with the stranger. Their work was organized like an intelligence operation, with Poitras as the mastermind. “Operational security — she dictated all of that,” Greenwald said. “Which computers I used, how I communicated, how I safeguarded the information, where copies were kept, with whom they were kept, in which places. She has this complete expert level of understanding of how to do a story like this with total technical and operational safety. None of this would have happened with anything near the efficacy and impact it did, had she not been working with me in every sense and really taking the lead in coordinating most of it.”

Snowden began to provide documents to the two of them. Poitras wouldn’t tell me when he began sending her documents; she does not want to provide the government with information that could be used in a trial against Snowden or herself.

nytimes.com

There were a number of subjects that Poitras declined to discuss with me on the record and others she wouldn’t discuss at all — some for security and legal reasons, others because she wants to be the first to tell crucial parts of her story in her own documentary.

On Greenwald’s & Poitras’ own Wikileaks-like operation:

nytimes.com

When The Guardian didn’t move as quickly as they wanted with the first article on Verizon, Greenwald discussed taking it elsewhere, sending an encrypted draft to a colleague at another publication. He also considered creating a Web site on which they would publish everything, which he planned to call NSADisclosures. In the end, The Guardian moved ahead with their articles. But Poitras and Greenwald have created their own publishing network as well, placing articles with other outlets in Germany and Brazil and planning more for the future. They have not shared the full set of documents with anyone.

“We are in partnership with news organizations, but we feel our primary responsibility is to the risk the source took and to the public interest of the information he has provided,” Poitras said.

nytimes.com

A new generation of sources, like Snowden or Pfc. Bradley Manning, has access to not just a few secrets but thousands of them, because of their ability to scrape classified networks. They do not necessarily live in and operate through the established Washington networks — Snowden was in Hawaii, and Manning sent hundreds of thousands of documents to WikiLeaks from a base in Iraq. And they share their secrets not with the largest media outlets or reporters but with the ones who share their political outlook and have the know-how to receive the leaks undetected.

Already a legend, a superhero, and a meme, Booker thought to himself, “Mayor, how could you be even more infallible in the eyes of your constituents—nay, the eyes of the nation?” The answer was clear: rescue a freezing dog. Booker responded to a tweet Thursday night from a concerned citizen who called authorities to rescue a dog named Cha Cha who was left outside in sub-zero temperatures. “I’ll head up myself & investigate,” Booker responded. And he did, saving the day—and the dog.

If you follow @corybooker on twitter he responds to nearly every tweet by DM’ing the constituent his phone number to get more info about requests/concerns, etc. Pretty remarkable actually. Does not surprise me in the least he was on the scene for a report of an abandoned/neglected dog.

I don’t think when she received the docs is that important in the scheme of things, since Snowald has admitted he talked with her in Feb 2013, as well as GG, and didn’t go to work for the NSA until sometime in March under their guidance, more than likely.

So, it appears to me to be a fairly clear-cut case of conspiracy.

But, in subsequent reports, it is made to appear that that it was a “surprise” when they received the stolen material.

What would be important is how many times he actually sent her documents. Right now, he’s facing 3 felony charges; with that kind of information, it could be far more, if he was sending it to her in bits and pieces, which is probably the case, since it would have taken some time to locate them within the NSA, steal them, and get them encrypted in emails.

From Wiki:

Though Oswald had wanted to attend Moscow University, he was sent to Minsk to work as a lathe operator at the Gorizont Electronics Factory, which produced radios, televisions, and military and space electronics. Stanislau Shushkevich, who later became independent Belarus’s first head of state, was also engaged by Gorizont at the time, and was assigned to teach Oswald Russian. Oswald received a government subsidized, fully furnished studio apartment in a prestigious building and an additional supplement to his factory pay—all in all, an idyllic existence by working-class Soviet standards, though he was kept under constant surveillance.

But Oswald grew bored in Minsk. He wrote in his diary in January 1961: “I am starting to reconsider my desire about staying. The work is drab, the money I get has nowhere to be spent. No nightclubs or bowling alleys, no places of recreation except the trade union dances. I have had enough.” Shortly afterwards, Oswald (who had never formally renounced his U.S. citizenship) wrote to the U.S. Embassy in Moscow requesting return of his American passport, and proposing to return to the U.S. if any charges against him would be dropped.

So you’re saying Booker should be lockstep with whomever the dem in power is? That’s Boehner/McConnell territory. No, I wasn’t happy with it, but I’d rather someone speaks his/her mind than just go along to simply go along. That doesn’t serve the American people at all.

I’ve had Booker respond to my own tweets - in one instance asking for restaurants to try in the Ironbound. He got his followers to provide multiple options, and he suggested Nastos for dessert - ice cream.

He doesn’t have to do that, but he sees value in getting people excited about the state and using new media to help.

Exactly this. We have a mayoral candidate right now in Boston (John Connolly) that has similar skills.

In reality, twitter is no different than the office phone/answering service. For now, those that embrace that concept will win.

I agree with you, and if he had just been representing himself, I would have had no issue with him speaking his mind at all.

What I objected to was the fact he was the official spokesperson for Obama, and he stabbed him in the back.

Salon has been unprofitable through its entire history. Since 2007, the company has been dependent on ongoing cash injections from board Chairman John Warnock and William Hambrecht, father of former Salon CEO Elizabeth Hambrecht. During the nine months ended December 31, 2012, these cash contributions amounted to $3.4 million, compared to revenue in the same period of $2.7 million.

John Edward Warnock (born October 6, 1940) is an American computer scientist best known as the co-founder with Charles Geschke of Adobe Systems Inc., the graphics and publishing software company. Dr. Warnock was President of Adobe for his first two years and Chairman and CEO for his remaining sixteen years at the company. Although retired as CEO in 2001, he still co-chairs the board with Geschke. Warnock has pioneered the development of graphics, publishing, Web and electronic document technologies that have revolutionized the field of publishing and visual communications.

William R. “Bill” Hambrecht (born 1935) is an American investment banker and chairman of WR Hambrecht + Co which he founded in 1998. He helped persuade Google to use an Internet-based auction for their initial public offering (IPO) in 2004, instead of a more traditional method using banks and other financial companies to find buyers. He is credited with popularizing this “OpenIPO” model, using Dutch auctions to allow anyone, not just investing insiders, to buy stock in an IPO, potentially raising more money for startups. Some of the companies he has helped have an IPO like this include Overstock.com, Ravenswood Winery, Andover.net and Salon.com.

Thank you Silicon Valley!

Georgia man arrested for beheading and stabbing puppies

A man in Cobb County, Georgia has been arrested for allegedly mutilating two puppies his neighbors gave him to watch.

Robert Williams Davis, 38, was arrested just before midnight on Saturday after police officers found the dogs’ dead bodies in a wooded area behind his house.

A 14-year-old neighbor of Davis had given him and his girlfriend the two pit bull puppies. A pit bull rescue group was going to pick the dogs up within a few days. But the neighbor, Tyler Tedesco, learned that Davis had killed the two puppies. He called 911.

“I saw that, I dropped what I was doing and just walked away. I couldn’t bear to see that because I raised those dogs,” Tedesco told WSBTV.

Davis allegedly killed both puppies with a pair of scissors. Police said one dog was beheaded, while the other was stabbed in the throat. It is unclear why Davis killed the puppies.

Unclear? Maybe because the guy is a fucking animal.

This is why:

According to Ficken’s attorney, he’s resigned over the MRCA’s handling of criticisms of the event. Ficken especially objects to the fact it hasn’t dissociated with the “rogue rodeo clown” who wore the mask, a man who goes by the name of Tuffy Gessling. Ficken believes the clown “jeopardized the organization” and “ought to be kicked out,” Watkins said. The MRCA has posted an apology on its website

Garbage collection is probably too socialist for this guy:

State Rep.: Why ‘beautify’ state highways when bridges need repairs?

Pennsylvania spends about $15 million a year paying Department of Transportation workers to clean up trash and mow along state-maintained roads.

That’s the kind of spending that needs a second look before taxpayers ought to be asked to absorb the cost of a gas tax increase, state Rep. Stephen Bloom, R-Cumberland, said Tuesday.

Bloom is one of the Republicans in the House who broke ranks with the governor, ultimately derailing the transportation plan in June. Bloom is also emerging as one of the most strident conservative voices in the state House.

Earlier this month, he attracted national attention by announcing an “academic freedom” bill intended to allow students to defend creationism or debate climate change science in class.

Bloom is now circulating a memo seeking support for a bill that would mandate that PennDOT must spend its money on road and bridge repairs instead of things like bicycle paths and other non-essential programs.

[…]

State Rep. Brad Roae, R-Crawford, agreed.

“Litter cleanup, bike trails, intersection enhancements, etc. are nice, but bridges are absolutely essential,” Roae said.

[…]

Atavists and “poor white trash” seem to go together.

Really, litter collection is considered non-essential?

Also, there are good reasons to mow the greenery on the side of roads.

The atavists really do want to turn society all the way back.

This is America, 2013:

Northwest school board begins budget work

[…]

In other business at the school board meeting Monday night, Northwest High School science teacher Dave Olson made a presentation asking that Northwest High School students “learn about both the scientific evidence for and against neo-Darwinian evolution.”

[…]

Near the end of his presentation on evolution, Olson told board members that he is not proposing that Northwest High School students learn about any religious viewpoints such as creationism and he is not proposing that students learn about intelligent design. He also said he is not proposing that students stop learning the evidence for evolution. [ed: Lyin’ for Jesus] Instead, he said he wants students to learn the evidence both for and against neo-Darwinian evolution.

Olson gave a PowerPoint presentation with slides that raised questions about Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, with several of the slides quoting Jonathan Wells, a Ph.D. who questions the theory of evolution. One of the slides was titled “Survival of the Fakest.” It quoted Wells as saying, “Science now knows that many of the pillars of Darwinian theory are either false or misleading. Yet biology texts continue to present them as factual evidence of evolution. What does this imply about their scientific standards?”

Olson also pointed to Ernst Haeckel, who “misrepresented drawings of embryos to make them look more similar than they actually are” because he wanted to support the theory of evolution. In addition, he said there is a lack of fossil evidence to show evolutionary transitions in various species.

The science teacher also took issue with neo-Darwinism that says new species arise from the accumulation of mutations in DNA to create new variations, with natural selection helping to eliminate harmful mutations. However, his slide said, “Today, genetics show that most mutations are harmful, thus new traits are not likely to occur. Traits are naturally selected, no new traits are formed.”

One of Olson’s slides cited Darwin himself to support teaching evidence against the theory of evolution. That slide quoted Darwin as saying, “A fair result can be obtained only by fully stating and balancing the facts and arguments on both sides of each question.” Olson asked the board’s curriculum committee to consider his request for a change so that both the scientific evidence for and against neo-Darwinism be taught.

[…]

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the massive Northeast blackout due, in part to a downed tree on a power line in Ohio and the failure of the distribution system to contain the outage locally. 45 million people in the US and 10 million in Canada were without power.

Since then, the utilities have reported some improvements on the interconnects to keep the power flowing in case of localized outages. Hardening the distribution system is a huge concern, especially with all manner of natural disasters occurring in recent years - tornadoes, hurricanes, and flooding being the most common. Nationally, people have on average 1 blackout a year - usually weather caused.

Around here, PSEG is installing new power lines/poles, and some people are upset because the new poles smell and are much taller than they thought they’d be. They ignore that the new poles are more likely to survive wild weather, have new lightning grounding systems, and carry more power so that the grid is more stable.

I semi-heard a report on NPR this morning talking about suggestions that these huge grids be broken up into smaller ones to mitigate the numbers affected by those kinds of outages. Didn’t get the full argument, although the newscast should be available later.

Idiots. I don’t like the look of power lines and poles either, I wish we had more of this stuff underground somehow. But I’d rather have new and improved service over stuff that’s old and falling apart or prone to fall apart.

I remember that day well in part because today happens to be my birthday so suffice to say my 22nd was one to remember.

I was living in Ottawa, Ontario at the time. I got lucky because Ottawa lies directly south of the province of Quebec and they did not lose power on their side.

One of the most poignant memories of that night was driving through the Ottawa downtown core and everything was pitch black. Like eerily dark. In an urban area it’s easy to get used to the lights and forget how dark it actually gets when the sun goes down.

Somalia is a fine example of what happens when you really do get government “out of the way”

QFT.

It’s a failed state in every sense of the term.

It’s an incubator for extremists and terrorists, including al Qaeda.

It’s a home to piracy affecting commerce along key trade routes in and out of the Red Sea/Suez Canal from the Indian Ocean.

It’s a source of unrest likely to spill over to its neighbors, including Ethiopia, which has attempted to quell the violence with little success.

Islamists are running around with fiefdoms of control, but there’s no interest in public health, infrastructure, or anything that resembles a functioning society. The few people who do provide public health services are targeted - including MSF.

MSF is a tremendous organization bringing health services to underserved regions of the world that are racked with violence, war, drought, and natural disasters. But when their own staff gets targeted, they have no choice but to pull out for their own safety. It’s the toughest decision they can make, and it’s going to mean that the lives of those who they could help are made that much more difficult. It’s that fact - that they can help improve the lives of so many through vaccinations and urgent care that keeps them working in conditions that are unimaginable to most folks.

Burying the lines can be far more expensive than the overhead lines, and if there’s a problem with the underground lines, it can take longer to repair.

It makes sense to bury lines where there are significant tree stands and the likelihood of wind damage, but that has to be balanced by areas where flooding is as great, or greater, a concern.

Hero of the day:

When State Trooper Ian Henry saw a red Dodge pickup truck barreling down the Northway in his rearview mirror Saturday morning, he switched on his radar and clocked it at 86 mph

Why you ask?

When he pulled the driver over at about 9 a.m., the woman in the passenger seat told him why there was such a need for speed: She was in labor.

Which you know what happens next according to the movies:

When the ambulance arrived, the expectant mother — whom State Police did not identify — was whisked inside and the emergency crew took over, much to Henry’s relief. “Probably a minute later, one of the EMS personnel said, ‘Here comes the baby,’”

Now I know, yawn, but wait for it:

Henry did not issue a ticket, a matter that he said is up to his discretion.

“Troopers,” he said, “we have a heart.”

Who knew?!

An update to a local story about puppy abuse a while back. ( malnourished puppies were abandoned near the rail road tracks.)

The man who left three pit bull puppies for dead on railroad tracks — then abandoned four more dogs in the back of a U-Haul truck — received a sentence Tuesday of six months in jail as a dog owner branded him a “monster” and a “sociopath.”

Found the original story. It says a “George Bush mask” but does not specify if GHW or GW. Maybe meant GHW, although GHW was not President in 1994.

A dummy with a George Bush mask stood beside the clown, propped up by a broomstick.

T.J. Hawkins rolled out the big inner tube, and the bull lowered his head, shot forward and launched into the tube, sending it bounding down the center of the arena. The crowd cheered. Then the bull saw the George Bush dummy.

He tore into it, sending the rubber mask flying halfway across the sand as he turned toward the fence, sending cowboys scrambling up the fence rails, hooking one with his horn and tossing him off the fence.

Your asterisk nails the point. Had Stalin not been a conniving S.O.B. from the start, Hitler may never have achieved the position to wreak such havoc on Russia in the first place. An additional bizarre note is how Stalin basically gutted his military and its leadership during the bloody purges of the ‘30, leaving himself and his country f0cked for any major conflict. The Russian people were in that sense fortunate, relatively speaking, that its military was still able to rally and protect the country in its most dire time. The story of how the Russian government moved its industry to the East after the Nazi onslaught so that it could re-arm is quite amazing.

Every politician surrounds themselves with kids to prove a point. Kissing babies is a time worn tradition during elections. Saying that having photos with kids is a sign of tyranny is itself a sign of derangement over who’s in office.

In case it hasn’t been posted:

Booker put the dog in a heated police car, called its owners and scolded them for leaving the dog outside. The owners said they were away from home and didn’t know how the dog, named Cha Cha, got out of the house. They apologized to Booker.

The news people were there before Booker. They are the ones who put it out on Twitter.

My impression is that, unfortunately, Ms. Murphy is deceased; I know everyone’s hoping for another scenario like the Ariel Castro sex slave incident with the three young women, but I doubt that’s the case this time.

In regard to Mr. Taylor, the latest I’ve seen is that he was indeed incarcerated when Alicia Showalter Reynolds was murdered; that rules him out for that particular homicide, and possibly rules him out as the Route 29 Stalker.

Peggy Noonan stayed at a shitty airport motel in Pittsburgh AND ITZ OBAMAZ FAULT!!11!!

Check out this whiny White Privilege:

I’m in Pittsburgh, making my way to the airport hotel. The people movers are broken and we pull our bags along the dingy carpet. There’s an increasing sense in America now that the facades are intact but the machinery inside is broken.

The hotel has entrances on two floors. I search for the lobby, find it. Travelers are milling about, but there’s no information desk, no doorman, no bellman or concierge, just two harried-looking workers at a front desk on the second level. The man who checked me in put his phones on hold when I asked for someone to accompany me upstairs. As we walked to the room I felt I should explain. I told him a trial attorney had told me a while back that there are more lawsuits involving hotels than is generally known, and more crime, so always try to have someone with you when you first go to your room. I thought the hotel clerk would pooh-pooh this. Instead he said, “That’s why we just put up mirrors at each end of the hall, so you can see if someone’s coming.” He made it sound like an amenity.

“What should we do then, scream?” I asked. He laughed and shrugged: “Yeah.”

Things are getting pretty bare-bones in America. Doormen, security, bellmen, people working the floor—that’s maybe a dozen jobs that should have been filled, at one little hotel on one day in one town.

Concierge, bellhop, doorman at an AIRPORT HOTEL?

My opinion is that the attention to the lips of the mask crossed the line.

I’d say that it is something where you can’t point at a single particular detail and say it made it “racist” whereas another detail did not. Sort of a collective effect where you *know* it’s racist. The whole performance went way over the line in multiple ways.

On a separate note burning or mauling a political figure in effigy as part of a protest is well established*. Doing so as part of what is supposed to be generally non-partisan entertainment is something else, and part of what makes this incident particularly repulsive.

* - And there is also some ground within political satire. Though usually there is some measure of restraint and respect shown in the established media.

re: #307 Vicious Babushka

Wait, she stayed at a motel and was complaining about the service because it wasn’t up to the level of say the DC Grand Hyatt? Really?

She’s right that the infrastructure around the nation has gone to crap. We build and forget that building stuff requires regular and periodic maintenance. It even means having to replace and rebuild stuff better as new technologies come along.

The GOP is strangling the government’s ability to maintain the basic stuff of infrastructure. And that means big plans (even the misguided Musk hyperloop) wont get done because they require lots of money.

Let’s just forget that it cost billions to build the national highway system, and that system is approaching the end of its design life (and in many cases already surpassed it by a significant margin).

Highways and bridges and tunnels alone can’t get everyone to their destination. Airports and air traffic control systems need upgrades that have been in the works for years and still not fully implemented.

High speed rail has been long sought, especially on the NEC, and yet starved of money despite its necessity and ability to take the load off the overburdened air traffic system in the Northeast.

Oh, and who’s fault is it that the owner of the hotel put profits over all else, including hiring people to fill various jobs that she complains about not being filled?

The GOP is busy blaming Obama for Obamacare being the reason hiring isn’t happening, or businesses are shifting costs to avoid hiring, but that ignores that businesses have long put profits over employee well being, including their health.

If they didn’t have to provide health care benefits (and the tax code includes benefits to businesses that do), they wouldn’t. Same with paid sick leave and other employee protections.

Some businesses are more attuned to employee well being and pay better wages, but they are in the minority. That has to change, but there’s no easy solution. It has to take a different mindset in the business community that paying better wages means more productivity, better performance, and can stimulate the economy since the money goes back into buying some of the very products being offered.

re: #314 Feline Fearless Leader

I’d say that it is something where you can’t point at a single particular detail and say it made it “racist” whereas another detail did not. Sort of a collective effect where you *know* it’s racist. The whole performance went way over the line in multiple ways.

On a separate note burning or mauling a political figure in effigy as part of a protest is well established*. Doing so as part of what is supposed to be generally non-partisan entertainment is something else, and part of what makes this incident particularly repulsive.

* - And there is also some ground within political satire. Though usually there is some measure of restraint and respect shown in the established media.

I agree with most of what you typed. But if you do take it piece by piece, the only thing that makes sense in a racial context is playing on the stereotype of the masks lips. The simple fact of wearing the mask can’t be racist (unless it was blackface, this was just a halloween mask). Saying we’re gonna stomp Obama is ridiculously inappropriate and, as DecaturDeb said, “extreme seditious partisanship”.

I don’t know, I sound like I’m making excuses for it to “not” be racism.

I’ve got a question about the Rodeo Clown incident vis-a-vis racism. Does the clown wearing the mask by itself make it racist? Or is it the other clown plying with the lips on the BO mask make it so?

Having the broom stick stuck where the sun don’t shine and the “We’re going to stomp Obama now.” makes it distasteful/repulsive/borderline psychotic.

What is your opinions on this? Overt racism, thinly veiled racism, what?

My opinion is that the attention to the lips of the mask crossed the line.

How about infantile, asinine and tasteless? How about also repulsive enough to visitors of the state fair that it warranted their suspension? I am sure they can more than make up for the lost income by going on the private conservstive rodeo circuit…

Israel is going to do all it can to avoid that. They’ll likely endure more in the way of mortar/missile attacks like those that prompted the UAV strike in Sinai, but those are manageable. It wont involve the Egyptian military though, and even Hamas isn’t likely to push for a full war, which in the current environment lacks a strong backer to provide with the weapons and support.

Israel will remain relatively stable compared to its northern and southern neighbors. I’d be much more concerned about Jordan though, which has so far avoided the violence and conflict along its borders (Iraq and Syria), even though a significant refugee population now huddles in safety. If Jordan falls into the violence, it could spiral into Saudi Arabia as well.

Heh. I know the Pittsburgh airport and that place is literally in the middle of the airport parking lots along the run of a few long people movers running out into the middle of said lots. That the movers can be down should not be surprising since that happens.

Hyatt Regency. 3 1/2 stars according to Expedia. At that rating you’d expect a little more staff about than just desk clerks. But also won’t be bustling that much since it’s just not that sort of place. Also curious what time she turned up - if it was after a late flight in there will be fewer staff around.

Also, it’s an airport hotel. I avoid those simply due to the noise!

This is a bit like a fraternity “hazing” discussion. There’s a line, you know when it’s been crossed, but it’s also very hard to point at the ground and say that is where the line is.

There’s a lot of behaviors that are obviously way over that line, but often you don’t sit down and plan of jumping over the line.* Things work their way there in increments and then sidle across. The mask - OK, a bit edgy. Then the announcer rhetoric gets added. Then something else.

Plus while it might get by amongst themselves as a in-joke (and probably started as a prank while practicing or something) it will not pass as a public display since their actions also represent broader groups like the Missouri State Fair. With membership comes responsibilities as representatives of that group and all that.

* - This is a place where hazing and political commentary differ. The latter often *wants* to jump the line in order to garner attention. The former, barring mental illness, are hopefully not sitting there and seriously discussing how they can physically or mentally abuse their pledges simply for the sake of abusing them.**

** - If they are I hope they get criminally prosecuted for it. But let’s avoid the paddle-wielding pledge master stereotype and assume for a minute it’s a few young adults trying to develop an activity that will help bring a group of young men together and they are not being very clear in working out consequences.

Barton insisted that while global warming does occur, is it not man-made but rather happens naturally and is no different than normal temperature fluctuations.

“Global warming occurs,” Barton stated, but “we haven’t had it in sixteen years. But anthropogenic? That hasn’t been proved at all, not by a long shot. Anthropogenic means man-caused global warming. I mean, we’ve got cycles, you bet. That’s why we have averages. That’s why in Texas we go from summers of 70 degrees to summers of a 120 degrees. I mean, it’s averages.

OT: Just a reminder that—like non-Muslims—peaceful, law-abiding Muslims who are minding their own business are also murdered by militant Islamists.

Agents: 44 gunned down in Nigeria mosque

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — Suspected Islamic militants wearing army fatigues gunned down 44 people praying at a mosque in northeast Nigeria, while another 12 civilians died in an apparently simultaneous attack, security agents said Monday.

Sunday’s attacks were the latest in a slew of violence blamed on religious extremists in this West African oil producer, where the radical Boko Haram group, which wants to oust the government and impose Islamic law, poses the greatest security threat in years.

It was not immediately clear why the Islamic Boko Haram would have killed worshipping Muslims, but the group has in the past attacked mosques whose clerics have spoken out against religious extremism. Boko Haram also has attacked Christians outside churches and teachers and schoolchildren, as well as government and military targets. […]

A lot Americans like to call themselves anti-war or non-violent yet many of the same are largely silent about incidents like the one in Nigeria. They say, no to war in Syria while in fact there is a war raging in Syria. They like to blame the Iraq war on sectarian violence in Iraq without acknowledging that said sectarian violence has been going on for decades. The only thing that masked this violence for a period was the dictatorship of Saddam Hussein. It’s largely Sunni vs. Shia with Shia losing out the most.

FIFA To Russia: Please Explain Your Anti-Gay Law To Us

FIFA has asked authorities in 2018 World Cup host Russia for “clarification and more details” about a new anti-gay law, joining the International Olympic Committee in seeking answers from Moscow.

Legislation prohibiting “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations among minors” has provoked an international furor since President Vladimir Putin signed it off in June and sparked growing concern at the IOC leading to the Sochi Winter Games in February.

The two most influential organizations in world sports are both now asking Russia how the law would be enforced during their marquee events.

“FIFA has asked the Russian authorities for clarification and more details on this new law,” soccer’s governing body said in a statement Tuesday.

“Russia has committed to provide all visitors and fans with a warm welcome and ensure their safety” during the monthlong tournament, FIFA said, adding that “FIFA trusts that the 2018 FIFA World Cup hosts will deliver on this promise.”

He was smart not to do so; Without Booker on the ballot, Christie will cruise to victory.

Sad fact of political life: The composition of the overall ballot matters, and you can lose if you end up having a ‘rock-star’ from the other party on the same ballot as you. Having an asshole from your own party can also hurt, but it is often possible to do effective “I’m not with Stupid”-type damage control (as Mark Kirk was able to do and win his Senate seat in 2010. His pro-access-to-abortion record allowed him to escape association with the anti-abortion gubernatorial candidate, Bill Brady.).

So, apparently Egypt’s military lost their fucking biscuits?

And McCain is blaming Kerry. Does that sound right?

The pro-Morsi people aren’t backing down like they were expected to and their fighting back is inflicting casualties. The Daily Mail (Yeah, I know, but even lower grade British newspapers are better for news from Egypt than their US counterparts) has a story, complete with photos, showing an armored police vehicle in Cairo getting pushed off of a bridge, killing 5 policemen. After the other side does things like that you can expect the security forces to be out for blood.

[Seinfeld]It is my opinion that we never should have landed a man on the moon. It’s a mistake. Now everything is compared to that one accomplishment. Now every body goes “I can’t believe they could land a man on the moon … and taste my coffee!” I think we all would have been a lot happier if we hadn’t landed a man on the moon. Then we’d go, They can’t make a prescription bottle top that’s easy to open? I’m not surprised they couldn’t land a man on the moon. Things make perfect sense to me now. Neil Armstrong should have said, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for every whining, complaining, SOB on the face of the earth.”[/seinfeld]

It also touches on something I’ve been saying for quite a while. When media outlets talk about stability or peace in the Middle East, they don’t mean what they say they mean. When oil prices spike because there’s conflict, it’s not because this is some new paradigm. It just means that the situation isn’t predictable.

Arab Spring upended the predictability around regimes that held power for decades with an iron fist. It inserted new factors. It meant upheaval at all levels.

But this is nothing new. There’s been strife across the Middle East for over 2,000 years. The names have changed, but it’s still about the land.

So, on the one hand you’ve got people complaining that the US shouldn’t be the world’s policemen (the Randian isolationists), and then you’ve got others who think that the President should be burning up the phone lines and satellites pushing the US interests in a fluid developing situation that has no good outcomes?

Lovely options to have.

The President doesn’t have many options here besides putting out press statements. The regime in place is trying to keep the old regime that it considered illegitimate based on the actions taken from returning to power while the old regime considers the current one illegitimate because it was ousted in what can be considered a coup.

Earlier, mention was made of the big northeastern blackout that happened 10 years ago today.

After 9/11, I decided to set some newspapers and magazines aside so I would have something to show future generations about what happened beyond what you could find online.

After 2001, I continued to collect newspapers and magazines across many major events up to the present day. My collection now includes papers/magazines from events such as:

- 9/11/2002 (one year anniversary)
- Columbia Disaster
- Second Iraq War
- Death of Saddam Hussein
- Asian Tsunami
- 2005 NHL Lockout
- Hurricane Katrina
- Death of Pope John Paul II
- London Terrorist Bombings
- First (and second) election of Barack Obama
- Death of Michael Jackson
- Saints win the Super Bowl
- Death of Osama Bin Laden

And yes, the Northeast blackout that occurred 10 years ago, August 14, 2003 (also my 22nd birthday).

Here’s a photo of those papers and the TIME magazine that followed the event.

It’s just the usual “the president can do no right” opposition rhetoric. Admitting the ‘no-win’ nature of the situation would undermine the “Obama foreign policy failure” angle many conservatives are playing.

Even more importantly, calling a situation ‘no-win’ would be anathama as doing so would be to:

A. Publicly admit the limits of American power and influence, which in some quarters would be taken and broadcast as an admission of defeat.

B. Put into play a narrative that does not play well with American audiences. America has never liked hearing about the tragic elements of life and politics in its entertainment and there is little to suggest political pronouncements would fare any better.

So the best thing those ring-wing speakers could do would be to say nothing. They can’t really tell the truth about the situation, because most Americans would not want to believe it.

“Hoarder House” Full of Records

The 2 Story House was filled to the brim by a 68 year old collector who had lived in the house since his childhood. He passed away in 2011 and the family was shocked at what they discovered. They soon realized why they had never been invited over and why he had been so reclusive. His Car was filled to the brim with records and the family suspected that he had been sleeping there over the last few years, as it was impossible to enter the house. The Bathroom and shower were also full of Records. We didn’t know it was the bathroom until we came upon a toilet.

The Family Tried to sell the house as is, but found it difficult and general word of mouth led them to call Apollo (he had previously been a customer). At first glance, we wanted to “Pass on it” as it looked like a nightmare, but we knew the collector well and figured there could be something worthwhile under all that.

It was actually fairly clean, overall, other than the piles of dust from over the years.

What Kind of records are they?

ALL Kinds. While he combed thrift shops and bought anything interesting to him over the last 10 years, the older stuff showed he also bought a variety of Rock and Rockabilly & Elvis records (His favorite) back in the 50s and 60s and kept them on shelves in pristine condition.

The best thing there? The 45′s, about 20,000 on shelves, mostly all original ‘as new’ store stock Rock & roll & Rockabilly, and oddball stuff, plus hundreds of Pristine EPs ranging from Elvis, Ricky Nelson, Country Artists, to the Rare Carl Perkins Columbia EP.

Swanson and Buehner React to Calls for Tolerance: Pope’s Clothes ‘Gay,’ Desmond Tutu ‘Hates Jesus’

Last week, Dave Swanson and Kevin Buehner of Generations Radio finally got wind of the pope’s declaration that he won’t “judge” gay priests and Bishop Desmond Tutu’s remarks that he would rather go to hell than “a homophobic heaven.”

Naturally, the two were outraged. Reacting to the pope’s comments, Swanson lamented, “‘Gay’ used to mean happy - you know, blessed, happy, rejoicing, rejoicing in the lord - not sort of lustful, licentious, focused on decadent sexuality.”

To which Buehner replied with what he himself described as “a low blow.”

“You know the song, ‘Deck the halls with boughs of holly’? You know that line, ‘Don we now our gay apparel’? Have you seen the pope’s dress?”
