If Trump is removed, Pence becomes president. My guess is that Ryan and McConnell would prefer to work with him. He’s more predictable and better fits the mold of “traditional Republican politician.”

The issue they are more likely to consider is whether pissing off Trump’s base will cost them in 2018 and 2020. But at some point, the greater good must outweigh your own political fortunes, right?

On the one hand, if they remove Trump now, yes, the base will be livid. However, that still leaves plenty of time between now and the mid-terms next November - and voters in general tend to have short memories. It’s a calculated risk that if Trump is impeached and removed within the next 90 days, it’ll have blown over with the base by 11/2018. But it could work - politics is, after all, the art of the impossible.
