It should be read as a cautionary tale against the kind of vigilante action that gets taken up by sociopaths for their own ends. Add an abused schizophrenic to a psychopathic father-figure and its about what you might expect. Not sure myself what the exact particulars of the case were, but the psychological aspects of the film itself, even if they had to make certain artistic embellishments, were spot on.

From what I’ve read regarding the “Bodies-in-the-barrels” case, the film-makers didn’t do a lot in the way of artistic embellishment. The film adheres very closely to the actual events of the case - which makes it all the more disturbing.
