Really though the Democratic party if it nominates Clinton or Sanders will have nominated a Catholic (whose paternal grandparents were Jewish), an African American, and a woman or Jew for its last three presidential nominees. The GOP meanwhile hasn’t even nominated a Catholic ever for the top spot and only once the number two (Goldwater’s running mate was Catholic).

They did, however, nominate a Mormon.
