Mom’s Mom and Dad’s Mom got along but I wouldn’t say they were friends. Just two totally different women as I got at downstairs. They did have some stuff in common of course besides my parents and brothers, they were and are both staunch Democrats, heavily influenced by the church they grew up in, loving to their children, and wiling to lend out a helping hand.

My mom and dad told me that his family was not allowed to come to the wedding because they disapproved of her. My dad’s mom bitterly regretted that decision to the end, and she was so glad that she got to make friends with my mom’s mom and to get to know my mom and pass on the family recipes. My dad’s dad was a stubbornly proud man, and as much as I am honored to be a son of the family, that is the one thing I hold against him.
