Not really. The Speaker gets the job if both the Prez and Veep die.

If the Prez dies in office, the Veep ascends. If the Veep dies or quits (see Spiro Agnew), the Prez can appoint. In Nixon’s case, he chose Ford, who was Speaker, who then chose Rockefeller when Nixon resigned (not the new Speaker).

So the speaker only is assured a chance to move up if both the VP and Prez bite it at the same time more or less?
