If Gaddafi had accepted the reality and stepped down early on, he probably could have had a relatively comfortable retirement from the life of a dictator.

Instead, he went mad dog, and ensured that he’s going to face war crimes charges.

Hopefully, this will be a lesson to the area’s other despots.
