No, it means that if you’re a legacy application, you’re 45% more likely to get accepted than if you’re not. And only 6% of the total pool are legacies, but that’s a little silly because nobody is really concerned about legacy apps to Pomona Community College.

I have found some of the attempts to modify preferential admissions to focus more on income levels over race to be interesting, worth considering to some degree, and having worked with minority students admitted to elite colleges that haven’t done the work necessary to help those students be successful, I think that affirmative action admissions is often an ineffective means to diversify student bodies. That said, given that we certainly do not have a color blind society - I have little tolerance the rightwing argument that affirmative action is unfair discrimination on the basis of race. What really ticks me off is when they use King’s rhetoric to support that argument, as in reality he was supportive of affirmative action.
