Not necessarily. Our goals aren’t the same as theirs were, nor are our tactcs.

If we wanted to do the modern-day equivalent of what Ghengis Khan did in Afghanistan, we could. We certainly have the technology to do so. We could probably kill half the Afghan population before CPAC is over, if we wanted to.

Turning the place into a functioning modern society is going to be a hell of a lot harder.
