Worried about what Ann will say? Next you'll be telling me some Jewish leaders are disappointed in Hilliary and Obama?

5 SixDegrees  Sat, Feb 28, 2009 9:28:20am

Why was she invited to speak in the first place? She's a massive embarrassment. Giving her a podium is like putting pennies on the rail - chances of causing a train wreck are huge.

Standing up and saying, "We won't tolerate bigoted hate speech like you've espoused in the past" would be good for the party.

Another great little essay by wretchard over at Belmont:

...
At some level, the world isn’t simply betting on American stability in the sense of stasis. It is betting on its dynamic stability; in other words on the controlled instability of the US political and economic process; the unrest within civility, the unum in the pluribus, to find a non-destructive way through the thicket into the new world. What the Russians, the Chinese and the rest of the world are ultimately relying on isn’t Obama. It is American political and economic “Minutemen”, who of all the slender hopes in this forlorn world, still represent the best chance of figuring out how to square the circle. The Tea Parties, the culture wars, the debates — this is what the USA has that they don’t. Ultimately, much of the world knows how a big a hole we’re in, but lack the framework of freedom with which to explore solutions.

It’s quite a vote of confidence. I wonder if this generation is up to it.

32 Charles Johnson  Sat, Feb 28, 2009 9:38:56am

In case anyone cares, I'm writing this from cpac. I gave up a perfectly good seat in the ballroom Coulter was the next speaker in to go across to a national security presentation. When I tried to go back there was a line of conservative teeny boppers a mile long to get in. So I went out to McDonalds for lunch. Having a nice time. Wish you were here. I had a long chat with Joe the Plumber earlier. Very capable guy. Looks like a football player. I guess I'll go see what else is on now. Lots of high spirits here but the situation is so hopeless, I think, that it just feels good to be around people I agree with. I find myself completing the sentences of many people I talk with.

Probably for the best. All of that shit is reletively new. I didn't face it either at FSU or UT. Of course, for my foreign studies credits I focused on the Far East, particularly China and Japan, rather than Africa or, for that matter, Europe.

I did have one instructor that was a dedicated Marxist (he thought Stalin was the greatest leader in the 20th Century), but even there it wasn't the hard-core indoctrination that so many Universities are doing now.

If anything, I'd say that my time in College was less dogmatic or indoctrinating than Middle or High School. Which is as it should be, except 7th Grade Leftist teachers shouldn't be trying to make sure that their class turns out to be good little Leftists.

This was San Jose State in California. The woman's studies teacher was also a marxist, Sontag wanna-be, old, negative, hostile to men, considered childbearing and rearing to be a form of slavery...etc. My classmates soaked it up. I was the disloyal opposition.

Coulter has been engaged several times, but never married.[11] She has dated Spin founder and publisher Bob Guccione, Jr.,[12] and conservative writer Dinesh D'Souza.[13] In October 2007, she began dating Andrew Stein, the former president of the New York City Council, a liberal Democrat. When asked about the relationship, Stein told the paper, "She's attacked a lot of my friends, but what can I say, opposites attract!"[14] On January 7, 2008, however, Stein told the New York Post that the relationship was over, citing irreconcilable differences.[15]

Winning comes down to the political will to win.
We didn't have the political will in Korea, or Vietnam. The problem is never with our troops, they have always been willing to win, in fact you have to stop them from winning.

The current administration doesn't have the will to win.

What I'm seeing is a desire to 'stabilize' Afghanistan. The goal is vague.

“This increase is necessary to stabilize a deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, which has not received the strategic attention, direction and resources it urgently requires,” Obama said."

Brutal February for Blue Chips

A late burst of selling sealed a dismal finish for the stock market, which hit a fresh 12-year low on Friday as Citigroup sold a bigger chunk of itself to the government and General Electric slashed its dividend, spooking investors who were already jittery.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 119.15 points, or 1.7%, to end at 7062.93. The blue-chip benchmark ended down 937.93 points, or 11.72% on the month -- the worst percentage drop for February since 1933, when it fell 15.62%. The Dow industrials have fallen six months in a row and are now more than 50% off their record highs hit in October of 2007.

Ann didn't mention any of the details you did. She said that since the Soviet Union couldn't win in Afghanistan, we shouldn't expect too either. She obviously doesn't understand the quality of our troops, has already forgotten how our Special Ops, by themselves, were able to send the Taliban running out of the country in 2001, and doesn't understand that words of support for our troops are important no matter what president we may have.

She is speaking for the leftist media when she talks like that. She is using the words she thinks they really want to use but don't say aloud. She does this constantly. There is a CCC karma there somewhere.

WaPo (page 6) has it.

NEW YORK, Feb. 27 -- The Obama administration has said it will boycott a major U.N. conference on racism scheduled for April unless significant changes are made to the draft outcome document, which U.S. officials say unfairly singles out Israel for censure and could restrict freedom of speech.

A State Department official said that the current text is "unsalvageable" and that the United States would reconsider its position only if the negotiators stripped out provisions criticizing Israel's occupation of Palestinian lands and recommendations for restrictions on the defamation of religions, an initiative by Islamic states that Washington fears could undercut free speech. The United States also opposes any language requiring reparations for slavery.

This is a link to what I consider to be one of Reagan's greatest speeches. It was during the 1975 CPAC convention. I swear it's as if he had written it today. These are two of my favorite quotes. "I don ‘t know about you, but I am impatient with those Republicans who after the last election rushed into print saying, “We must broaden the base of our party”—when what they meant was to fuzz up and blur even more the differences between ourselves and our opponents." And,"A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency, or simply to swell its numbers."

The CIA Factbook does not paint a pretty picture of Afghanistan. Opium is also listed first among their crops. Zero water square footage. Overall it sounds like a candidate for becoming the nuclear waste storage unit for the world. Can the people be convinced to leave? Why would they want to stay?

Afghanistan is going to be a much greater challentge than Iraq was, due to the simple fact that it's not an actual country, in any normal sense of the term. Most people who have never been there, or haven't talked to people who have been there, have no comprehension of what the place is like, outside of the cities.

The terrain of Afghanistan is what shapes its history, and its people. Most of the country is filled with incredibly steep mountains, and is, for the most part, impassible by vehicles. In between the mountains are narrow valleys, which is where the different tribes live in their little villages, raising goats and growing whatever other food they are able to get to grow. Most of the people in one of these villages have never been to the next valley, much less to Kabul. They've probably never met anyone from outside of their own village.

This is where Afghanistan differs from Iraq. In Iraq, there is a clan/tribal structure that comes first in people's loyalties, but at some level, they do have an identity as Iraqis. They may not like the central government, particularly if they aren't members of the ruling faction, but they at least acknowledge its existence. In Afghanistan, the people living in those villages are probably only barely aware that there is such a thing as a central government, and they've most likely never met anyone involved with it. Even if they have, they speak a different language from them.

For an American or other westerner, going into one of those villages is almost like being on an "away team" from the Enterprise or something, trying to explain the Federation and your starship to some aliens.

Getting those people to work toward a common goal of creating a cohesive society is going to take decades, if not centuries.

Not necessarily. Our goals aren't the same as theirs were, nor are our tactcs.

If we wanted to do the modern-day equivalent of what Ghengis Khan did in Afghanistan, we could. We certainly have the technology to do so. We could probably kill half the Afghan population before CPAC is over, if we wanted to.

Turning the place into a functioning modern society is going to be a hell of a lot harder.

416 LynnfromNZ  Sat, Feb 28, 2009 11:56:48am

re: #413 ConservatismNow!

Be better than what they have. Honestly, ever since Fran Tarkenton, it seems, our strategy has been to build a team good enough to withstand the lack of a decent QB.

I mean, you put half the starting QBs in the league on the Vikes last year and they probably make the NFC Championship game. Best running back in the league, fine o-line -- for my money the best center in the league -- stellar defense, and I was about to say "a black hole" at quarterback but that would get taken wrong around here.

Honestly, Jackson's a decent backup, he played well down the stretch last year, but hocked up a real choker in the playoffs.

One of the radio guys was saying that Detroit has the 1st, 20th and 33rd pick (all ahead of the pick the Pats traded for ((34th)) and he was flabbergasted that the Pats couldn't have swung a better deal with them. Maybe the Pats rewarded Cassel by letting him avoid Motown.

And he probably leapt at the chance to still play under Scott Pioli, plus he probably figured that by the time he gets a chance to lead the Pats, his team will no longer be as dominant as they were. Moving to a team with a lot of potential and having a chance at the starting job was a smart move overall.

I'm not an expert on the ancient campaigns in that part of the world, so I'm not sure if they even did that. They may very well have concentrated on the southern part of the country, which is much less daunting terrain. In those days, you could probably capture Kabul without anyone in the north even being aware of it (or caring, since, as I mentioned earlier, the people in the northern villages don't identify with the one down south anyway).

The reason we can't pursue a similar strategy today, of course, is that's where the Taliban come from (or at least where they come through, since they're largely a foreign element themselves).

427 lobo91  Sat, Feb 28, 2009 12:29:47pm

It's funny, but in some ways, the comparison between Afghanistan and Vietnam is actually more accurate than you might think. Outside of the cities, Vietnam was largely a collection of subsistence farming villages, inhabited by people who had very little interest in what was going on in Saigon.

From their standpoint, it didn't really matter all that much who was running the central government, because their main contact with them was when they sent soldiers into their village to take a chunk of the rice they'd spent all year growng as "taxes." Whether the soldiers were carrying M-16s or AK-47s was pretty much irrelevant to them. They certainly had no opinion as to whether the people who sent the soldiers into their village should be Communists or "democratically elected."

Trying to convince some village elder in the mountains of Afghanistan to support Karazai in Kabul is about as pointless as if the first British colonists had gotten off the boat and asked the Indians who they thought should be prime minister of England.

Here's an example:

Columnist Ann Coulter Shocks Cable TV Show, Declaring 'Jews Need to Be Perfected by Becoming Christians'

Coulter made the remarkable statements during an often heated appearance to promote her new book on advertising guru Donny Deutsch's CNBC show "The Big Idea."

In response to a question from Deutsch asking Coulter if "it would be better if we were all Christian," the controversial columnist responded: "Yes."

438 gman  Sat, Feb 28, 2009 2:47:35pm

Another example:

"Ann used the term '[bigoted word]' when describing what our homeland security policies should be: 'I think our motto should be post-9-11, "[bigoted word] talks tough, [bigoted word] faces consequences."'

439 LynnfromNZ  Sat, Feb 28, 2009 3:26:44pm

It's been standard Christian theology for 2,000 years that people would be better off by becoming Christians, just as atheists believe everyone would be better off as atheists and Muslims believe everyone would be better off Islamic, this is not bigoted hate speech.

"Perfected" Jews refers to Jews who have become Christians. It goes back to the fact that Jesus came as the Messiah promised in the Jewish scriptures, and came first to the nation of Israel, and then to the rest of the world, as both he and St. Paul make quite clear. All Christians are equal in the sight of God, of course, but humanly speaking, Christians hold the view that Jesus is the Messiah promised to Israel, who came through Israel to save the whole world. Therefore a Jew who believes in Jesus's messiahship is more "perfect" than Jew who does not in the Christian view.

Oh for goodness' sake. Many posters here on LGF have used far, far worse words talking about liberals, Obama and Democrats. Are they all bigoted hate-speakers?

Get a grip.

Don't start deflecting the blame to LGF posters. You asked for an example of bigoted hate speech and I gave it to you.

re: #428 Wendya

She isn't a serious thinker? She thinks circles around the majority of columnists writing today, including conservatives. I'd put Sowell and Walter Williams ahead of her, maybe Krauthammer if he were reliably conservative, Victor Davis Hansen, maybe one or two others but that's about it.

Look, you don't need to like her style. But as far as her substance goes she's among the best there is. If she was all style and no substance she wouldn't have lasted as long as she has, if she was all substance and no style -- another Joseph Kraft, say -- nobody would read her.

Yes, she want them to become Christian. Christians want other people to become Christians to receive salvation. This is bigoted and hateful of us?

re: #442 gman

I'm not deflecting blame, I'm wondering about your standards. If you consider somebody using the term "[bigoted word]" to mark them as a bigoted hate-speaker then obviously somebody using worse terms than that is more bigoted and more hateful, right?

She doesn't say that. She is saying Jews are "imperfect", which is a generalization.

You're not deflecting blame by saying LGF posters are posting much worse comments? It's pretty clear what you are doing.

LOL- the word you tried to post as not so bigoted, just got auto- edited.

re: #434 SixDegrees

In this context, "bigoted hate speech" is how people describe speech they don't agree with, which in itself is bigoted response. And why must "hate" always be part of the equation? I can hate something - broccoli, for instance - or I can be prejudiced toward something - French cars, for instance - but either does not automatically imply the other.

Why isn't it enough to say "I disagree with Ann Coulter?" Why must one also demonize her?

Good God, people.

re: #446 gman

So a generalization is necessarily bigoted? Or just when Ann Coulter says it?

How about when Ann says Jews are "imperfect"?

452 shiek al beif salami  Sat, Feb 28, 2009 4:38:08pm

How about when she said that Christians are "imperfect?" And even if she didn't actually say it in as many words, she certainly implied that many Muslims are imperfect. Oh, and then there were the Democrats and liberals - she tends to be pretty clear about their imperfection.

You are still not addressing the issue. Namely, that Ann said Jews are
"imperfect".

re: #446 gman

I just listened to the whole thing and I never heard her use the word "imperfect." If she did I missed it, give me the time count where she says it, otherwise don't use quote marks when you put words in people's mouths, but you're doing the same thing that show host did to Ann -- thinking that what you understand by "perfected" is what Ann means, even though Ann goes to a lot of effort to explain -- correctly -- what the phrase means theologically.

The show moderator didn't listen, and you evidently didn't even to try to listen to her as well -- all it means is a Jew becoming a Christian. Ann thinks it would be better for Jews if they did so, which is mainstream Christian theology, just like it's standard Christian belief that anybody is in a better relationship with God as a Christian.

Christians speak of Jews as being "perfected," and don't use that terminology with anyone else, because we consider the Jews, as God's Chosen People, to have a head start, so to speak, on salvation. The Messiah was foretold through the Jewish scriptures, Jesus the Messiah was Jewish, the disciples were Jewish, the first church was primarily Jews, St. Paul would always seek out Jews in the synagogue on his mission trips, etc. We Gentile Christians are described as "wild olive shoots" grafted onto the tree of life, which was originally Jewish. Therefore the "perfect" fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies is for someone in the Jewish tradition to acknowledge Jesus as the promised Messiah, yes.

I admire Ann actually for trying to speak of theological beliefs in such a setting, knowing the other person's not going to listen, and is just going to look for ways to pick what you say apart. Which happens to her a lot.

But if Ann's so anti-Jewish why did she say the ideal Democratic Party is one that looks like Joe Lieberman?

oops! You didn't read my comment #441 above. In that comment, I gave you the link to the video and quoted what she said,
"We just want Jews to be perfected".

Rats, I can see you're one of those people who isn't interested in honest discussions, but who simply throws up smokescreens when you don't have any intelligent replies to make. It's good to know things like that early on a board, saves time in knowing who who take seriously and who to ignore.

Once again, you deflect blame, and do not address the issue at hand.

There is a character from my favorite author, Robert Heinlein (regardless of how weird he got much past Stranger in a Strange Land) a Mr. Kikuyu, who in The Star Beast, says that there are those upon who's toes one must tread, until they apologize. The Ann Coulters are the ones who do the treading. Punch the bastards in the face until THEIR nose bleeds. Is she a bomb thrower? Good, we need a few. A rabble-rouser? Fine, so call me rabble.
Think of her as an articulate (and attractive) John Murtha, Henry Waxman, Charles Shumer, Sheila Jackson-Lee, Maxine Waters, Patrick Leahy, Chris Dodd, Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Tom Harkin ... I mean, seriously. the list of loud-mouthed, democrat ideologues is basically endless. Not to mention blasts from the past like Pat Schroeder, Bella Abzug, and Jerry Ferraro. So if Ann is willing to get up close and personal, and shove a knee in their collective groin, more power to her. The old adage has it the money talks and shit walks. The dems have it the other way around.
