Part of the problem apparently is traced back to how News Corp used inconsistent conventions on positive and negative numbers in the same document and that problem is not necessarily confined to News Corp’s filings. The SEC allows it, but considering that the numbers were all part of SEC filings, it should be required that all filings and documentation use the same conventions on positive and negative numbers within the filing to avoid this very situation. It makes already confusing documents more so.

Yet we keep adding pages to the tax code, not simplifying it
