hehe I wasn't too happy about it either, but if we have to chose programs to cut, I'll put NASA on the back burner awhile. What sucks more (and they talked about this too) there's going to be about 24,000 people out of work, I believe was the figure.

Those are the new computers that they added about half-way through the run. The original flight control system used discrete components and iron core memory (which preserved the contents of memory even through the Challenger's explosion and subsequent plunge into the sea in 1986 ).
The Shuttle was practically steam-punk in many ways.
As for SpaceX, I'll believe it when paying payloads are in LEO.

NASA used to publish a periodic series of tech bulletins on an amazing array of spin-offs. Some were as simple as improved canes for the handicapped. Another I remember was a use of the physics of suspended chain to damp the oscillations of high poles and towers. The alternate fuel might well come from the aeronautics side of NASA.

Yes, and strange research is going on all over the place. A small Army lab was once trying to produce solid hydrogen for its own nefarious purposes. (It's been declassified, so that avenue probably didn't work.)

One day you realize you have your life back.
My friends would probably agree with ggt's advice. (They say the scariest part was not necessarily going to rehab, but if things continued to deteriorate after they got out. But that phase passes.)

I liken it to finally deciding to be an adult. After a while you look around at people you used to think had it way more together than you did, but didn't make same choice and it's a shock.

My son is a pilot in the Navy and he said the private sector is starting to reach out to them as potential pilots in their space program. In fact he was just talking about it a couple of days ago. He said it was very exciting reading their proposals. He said of course it is every Navy pilots dream is to be an astronaut but the private groups are offering some potentially exciting opportunities.

Generally, they're against any science that challenges their religious preconceptions. On the other hand, science that goes towards better bombs, guns, or missiles, they're totally for. Tell them that their tax dollars are going towards space telescopes that will better help us understand the beginnings of the universe and they'll balk at the cost. But tell them that same money's going to better GPS satellites for the military and they'll gladly sign on the dotted line.

A federal judge refused to exclude evidence in a lawsuit against an Atlanta suburb that allegedly used rezoning to prevent an Islamic organization from building a larger worship center.
In its federal complaint, the A.G.A. Islamic Organization claimed that Lilburn, Ga., officials repeatedly rejected its application for an expanded Islamic center, despite A.G.A.'s efforts to comply with the city's zoning ordinance.
In 2008, when A.G.A. first applied to expand its worship center onto a nearby property, the city informed the organization that the 3.5-acre lot, which was partially zoned as residential, needed to be rezoned for A.G.A.'s intended use.

Right now I am pissed! I went out yesterday and bought new shoes at Rockport, which I think look perfectly professional, spent $84, and HR says they are still unacceptable because they "look like tennis shoes."
WTF!! If a man wore these shoes they would be totally professional.
I can't wear high heels or dress flats because of my arthritis.
Now I have to call my dr.'s office and have them fax a note to HR to allow me to wear these shoes.
I have never had any corporate dress code issues, EVER, not even when I worked for EDS 20 years ago.

I could understand if this was a safety issue of wearing inappropriate footwear on a plant floor, but I am in cubicle land. I sometimes attend meetings where high-level executives are present, so I guess that crocs do not present the "image" that they would like to project, but the Rockports should be perfectly acceptable under the circumstances especially since a man would totally be allowed to wear them.

I never understood the whole "separate dress codes for men and women" idea. Women look perfectly professional wearing pantsuits or dress slacks, the same as men do. At some point in the exit interview I had a flash of realization that BNG was actually enjoying it; I swear I could see a twinkle in his eye when he told me about losing my health insurance.
I've met a few HR professionals in my day that were pretty cool, but those were usually at smaller companies. My rule of thumb is that the bigger the HR department, the bigger the asshole who runs it.

At my last real job, we got paid on Friday mornings so you could hit the bank at lunch. If you were getting laid off, they'd wait until 4 in the afternoon.
At GE, any separated employee was automatically the Enemy, escorted off the plant by a couple guards. Then again, our plant had a killing (company doc) after a firing.

Officials say the bomber apparently hid explosives in his turban and detonated them near the entrance of the mosque.

There was a report yesterday from a Reuters reporter, David Cay Johnston, that Fox News got billions of dollars in refunds and didn't pay income taxes for the past couple of years. Well, the reporter admitted that he screwed up Finance 101, and that Fox actually paid those billions in taxes.
"This is a big screw-up on my part," he told Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep earlier today.According to Johnston, "News Corp. reported numbers as positive numbers for cash paid for taxes for three years and then [in 2007] switched to reporting them as negative numbers — that is, as numbers in parentheses. ... And I didn't catch that those were negative numbers."
The company did disclose the accounting change it had made. Johnston said he does not recall if he read the note in its financial reports, and says that the way it was written would not have made him realize what News Corp. had done.
He didn't read the financials correctly, and didn't see that all those numbers in parens were actually losses or taxes paid, not money refunded by the IRS.
Instead of getting $4.8 billion in refunds, that's the amount News Corp paid in taxes on $10.4 billion in pre-tax profits.
Johnson had been with the NYT, and this was actually his first written piece for Reuters since joining the company. Ouch.

Part of the problem apparently is traced back to how News Corp used inconsistent conventions on positive and negative numbers in the same document and that problem is not necessarily confined to News Corp's filings. The SEC allows it, but considering that the numbers were all part of SEC filings, it should be required that all filings and documentation use the same conventions on positive and negative numbers within the filing to avoid this very situation. It makes already confusing documents more so.

On the simplification front, everyone in DC seems to agree that simplification is needed, but the question and the fight is over how to do it without losing tax benefits under the current system.
Every tax credit, every deduction, exemption, or modification helps a given constituency, but adds complexity.
Then, there's the AMT, which is meant to recover taxes paid on high income earners that would otherwise not be collected due to existing credits, deductions, exemptions, etc., that overlays the standard calculations.
Also, the JGTRRA, EGTRRA, ESA of 2008, ARRA of 2009, SBJTA of 2010, and HCR (to name but a few of the major bills from 2000 onwards) all add complexity to the rules by reducing tax rates temporarily, accelerating the tax rate reductions, extending the tax rate reductions, accelerating depreciation, adjusting limits, deductions, credits, etc. It's mind boggling in terms of complexity.

This otherworldly beauty, called the Sambas Stream Toad, or Bornean Rainbow Toad, was rediscovered in Borneo, Malaysia after 87 years without reported human detection. Scientists from the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak recently found three such toads.

Accounts of what happened last night vary, but the one thing they all agree upon is that Cantor played a lead role in telling the President that revenue increases simply aren’t going to happen, and that Obama didn’t react kindly to it. As Reid’s remarks suggest, Dems now seem to be seizing on this episode to elevate and isolate Cantor — who by many accounts is more adamantly opposed to revenue increases than even Boehner is — as the primary obstacle to compromise.
That’s why Reid is singling out Boehner and McConnell as operating “in good faith,” implicitly suggesting that Cantor isn’t, while simultaneously drawing attention to the grousing among anonymous Republicans that Cantor is damaging the GOP’s credibility and cause. According to one account, even Obama himself privately told Cantor that at this point he seems to be actively looking for ways to scuttle the possibility of compromise. The Dem message this morning is all about driving a wedge between Cantor on one side and Boehner and McConnell on the other by painting the latter two figures as the unlikely new faces of GOP reasonableness and flexibility.

Virginia girl found eating herself in cage in mobile home; parents Brian and Shannon Gore charged
A young girl was found caged and attempting to eat herself in a mobile home in Virginia, and cops say her parents are responsible.
The malnourished girl, believed to be either 5 or 6, was discovered in a crib that was converted into a makeshift cage after police arrived at the home in Gloucester County to investigate a burglary last week.
The girl's parents, Brian and Shannon Gore, were arrested and charged with felony child abuse. The mother was also charged with attempted capital murder.
However, the gruesome twosome now faces first-degree murder charges after the remains of what authorities believe to be another child were found buried outside their mobile home.

I'm not sure that report makes the situation any weirder; only that the police are discounting Levy's claims that he took or intended to take Kletzky to a wedding in Monsey and undermining parts of the confession In other words, they think that he was methodical in his intentions to murder him from the outset. His efforts to dispose of his remains is indicative of intent.
As usual for these kinds of cases, expect Levy's lawyers to consider using some form of an insanity defense when the time comes. Against that is the videotaped confession and the written confession in which he says he is sorry - that indicates that he knows the difference between right and wrong (one of the keys on determining mental state).

I'm not so sure. The more I learn I think it might have been necessary to let these guns move and provide irrefutable proof of where they end up. Even with the iron clad evidence the wingnuts are still trying to prevent any new laws about reporting straw purchases. If the investigation resulted in speculation about what might have happened to these guns the evidence might have been too weak to get any laws passed.

Over the last several days the White House has been walking back the savings on the Biden number. Thursday it was $2 trillion, Monday it was $1.7-1.8 trillion, Tuesday it was $1.6-1.7-1.8 trillion. This morning our staff met with White House folks and the wrap up from that meeting said that the WH is now at $1.5 trillion.Given those figures, [Cantor] pointed out that wherever we are- it’s a long way from the $2.4 trillion needed to meet House GOP goals of dollar for dollar so he suggested a possible short-term goal in order to avoid default. He then said to the President that since we can only reach so much in savings and you (President) keep moving the goalposts, I will move off my position of only doing one vote in order to avoid default.
And that’s when Obama started to “lecture” the House Republican majority leader. But either way, it sounds to me like a final deal might be $1.5 trillion in cuts for a debt ceiling extension through the election. In exchange for no tax hikes, Republicans give on their “dollar for dollar” demand.
So it seems Obama is offering them smaller spending cuts as the Republicans continue to stall. The longer they wait, the smaller the cuts. Of course the 4 trillion dollar "Big Deal" cuts are still on the table but if Republicans insist on tax breaks for the rich it may be the only thing they get out of the deal.

According to its website, FFRF exists "to promote the constitutional principle of separation between church and state."Of course the main problem with that mission statement is that the "separation between church and state" is not a constitutional principle at all. You will look in vain for the phrase "separation of church and state" anywhere in the document created by the Founders. You could have found it in the constitution of the old Soviet Union, which ought to tell you something, but it's just not in our founding document at all.
Now there is a wall there, but it is not between church and state. It is a high and impenetrable wall between the state and the church. The state is forbidden by the First Amendment from meddling in the affairs of the church (ed. That would be the same first amendment Brian says doesn't apply to non-Christians. It can't tell it what to believe, how to worship, what to pray, or what to preach from its pulpits.
But there is nothing in the Constitution that prohibits the church from impacting the state, whether it does so by speaking truth to political power, or by advancing its cherished moral ideals in the public square.
