Race cars out the door with breakin oil changed at 300 miles and again at 1000 and again at 2000, losing compression and burning oil by 25,000, need a valve job if not rebore cylinders by 50,000, and that’s just for family driving, stress those pushrod engines and you rebuild at 10,000 just to keep it rolling - or trade it in on a Datsun 510.

If I could show my 1969 neighbors a 2009 Honda Accord, they’d think it was built by aliens (even compared to the Datsun!). Computer design, my friend, not to mention solid state ignition and engine computers, adjustable cams, reliable fuel injection, much better suspensions, much better tires, hell, much better radios, we won’t even mention nav systems.

It’s easy to look back with rose-colored glasses, but in engineering terms, those were the sad bad days that let the Japanese eat our lunch.

they were cheap, straight line racers…comparisons to rice burners is a no brainer…they were what they were, there are no rose colored glasses
