Nobody's arguing about whether he was an informer or not. The claim is that the FBI coached him to deliberately incite the wackos he was hanging around with, and the person making the claim is Turner's lawyer.

Germany's Far Right Gains on the Ground and in Opinion Polls

Germany's far-right scene is becoming more violent and crimes committed by right-wing extremists are on the rise. Those are the sobering findings of the new annual report (published on May 19) compiled by Germany's domestic intelligence agency, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. In 2008, 19,894 far-right motivated crimes were recorded —up 15.8% on the previous year. These crimes range from assault and arson to propaganda offenses. In a worrying development, Neo-Nazis are resorting to increasingly violent tactics. 1,042 violent far-right crimes were reported in 2008, a rise of 6.3% on the previous year. Using the internet to spread their anti-Semitic, xenophobic message, far-right groups are also becoming adept at mobilising supporters. The number of neo-Nazi demonstrations rose to 80 in 2008, compared with 66 in 2007.

I think it was Sharm that posted this amazing video the other day.

I sent the video to a good friend of mine who just returned from Russia, his wife is Russian and she will return next month. They currently send five month a year in the mother land.

I received this email from him today.

Jorline,

Remember I told you last year about not sending me any more information on the Georgian war as it might cause a problem. Here is what I___a got when she tried to open the sand painter link. Looks like censoring and possibly tracking, looking for enemies of state I am sure. Since I couldn't figure out what the audio was, people looked very emotional, I suspect some kind of anti-Russian message by the Ukrainians.

Will have to wait until she returns and perhaps I___a can tell us what it is about.

Email he received from his wife.

When I opened the page, it was written that video is not allowed in my country due to certain restrictions! I can not understand why and what kind of restrictions.

Yesterday, there weren't any hijackers, but today there are suddenly eight. Go figure.

Russia Detains Eight in Hijacking of Ship Arctic Sea (Update1)

Russia’s navy detained eight suspected hijackers of the Maltese-flagged freighter Arctic Sea after a 25-day odyssey that ended in the Cape Verde islands off west Africa, Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov said.

The eight hijackers are citizens of Estonia, Latvia and Russia, Serdyukov told President Dmitry Medvedev today in comments published on the Kremlin’s Web site. The armed group boarded the Arctic Sea on July 24, then forced the crew to change course toward Africa and to shut down the ship’s navigational equipment, he said. The freighter had been en route from Finland to Algeria.

Russia learned of the Arctic Sea’s location “several days ago” and kept that information secret to give its warship, the Ladny, time to navigate the Cape Verde archipelago and catch the hijackers by surprise, Rossiyskaya Gazeta, the government’s newspaper of record, reported. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization provided logistical support, the newspaper said.

The disappearance of the Arctic Sea, owned by Helsinki- based Oy Solchart Management AB, sparked international speculation about its fate, including a reported sighting at the Spanish port of San Sebastian, a possible second attack off Portugal and a Finnish police report of a ransom demand.

. . .

Defense Ministry spokesman Alexei Kuznetsov said by phone in Moscow today that he couldn’t confirm or deny the Rossiyskaya Gazeta report that NATO cooperated in the investigation. He said the crew was aboard the warship Ladny near Cape Verde and was being questioned. Carmen Romero, a spokeswoman for NATO in Brussels, couldn’t be reached for comment immediately.

The freighter was en route from Finland to Algeria with a cargo of timber valued at 1.3 million euros ($1.8 million). The seller was Rets Timber, a joint venture between Europe’s largest papermaker, Stora Enso Oyj, and UPM-Kymmene Oyj, Kari Naumanen, chief executive officer for Helsinki-based Rets, said by phone today. Most of the lumber came from other companies, he said.

Rets knows “nothing more than what’s public,” and wasn’t contacted by the hijackers, Naumanen said.

Finnish police didn’t contact Rets before going public with their investigation and haven’t shared internal information, he said. “They have not put one single question to us.”

The vessel will continue to Algeria to deliver its shipment, which is the property of three importers in Algeria, Naumanen said, declining to identify them. Rets has used Solchart for shipments to Algeria and Egypt for about 13 years, he said.

So, eight criminals hijack an 18 year old freighter laden with a cargo of $1.8 million worth of wood and demand $1.5 million in ransom? It hardly seems worth the effort, certainly no self-respecting Somali pirate would sink that low.

/sorry, I'm still not buying it, there's got to be more to this story that's not being made public yet

I'm not surprised about the issues in Russia. They're going down the path towards fascism, and Putin is still building himself up as the new Il Duce (have you seen his topless pics?). It's not pretty what's going on there. You have a huge uptick in nationalism, an aggressive/hostile foreign policy towards their neighbors, a crazy economic policy, and all this in a world recession. This is just freaking crazy.

A US News and World Report Article looks at some of the details of the health care bill - not the single payer and/or death panels, but the nitty gritty stuff - and decides that it is practically a tax.

Imagine a 25-year-old man, perhaps your son, just starting out in life, with good health but a skimpy income... This (insurance policy) might cost as little as $500 to $600 a year and typically comes with inexpensive primary-care access. But under Obamacare, he would have to pay a premium closer to $4,000—a potential back-breaker that might force him to take a government handout, further burdening his fellow taxpayers.

Damn. And we haven't even mentioned coverage for those of us with pre-existing conditions. Those prices will be through the roof. If it's not blindingly obvious by now, it never will be: Neither the Obama Administration nor the Democrats in Congress give a fuck about us.

Not a good combination.

I saw the pic of Putin with his tired six-pack (minus two) abs.

Cash is king in Russia. Our friends daughter never left Russian and is married to a Ukrainian...who is a very successful money launderer. They are the new money in Russia and two years ago they didn't have two rubles to rub together. The money laundering is sanctioned by the government...at this time. He could be here today...gone tomorrow.

If they ley UPS & Fed Ex deliver First Class mail the Post Office would be dead in the water.

America's beginning to wake up with a hangover. The worst pain is yet to come.

There are three things about hangovers. First, they are deserved. Hangovers are the result of self inflicted decadent behavior. Secondly, they are imminently survivable. America will survive whatever this yahoo tries to do. I have faith in my fellow countryman to eventually make the right decisions. Thirdly, they will eventually go away, with the lessons learned usually being temporary. We will be here again making the same complaints in another 20 years or so.

America is filled with plenty of folks capable of rational thought. Jimmy Carter the second will follow the same path as the first version.

Oh Good Lord, I've just seen footage of some lunatic shouting "Heil Hitler" at an Israeli man at a healthcare Town Hall.

By the way, the Israeli guy was a bit off base when he was talking initially, because he was comparing the treatment of veterans in Israel and the US and didn't seem to realise that US veterans have full state provided healthcare too. I agree with him that Israel by and large treats it veterans better, but not on this particular issue.

But that's getting off the point. Here we have some nutcase (and I don't think I'm jumping the gun by saying that she's one of "our" nutcases) thinking that it's alright to shout "Heil Hitler" at a Jewish guy because he's praising national healthcare. This is complete, total, evil, bad craziness.

If (and I hope it is a big if!) the healthcare bill passes, you'll have a certain percentage of people who will actually benefit. Their out of pocket costs will go way down. That number could grow as other people see how easy it is to let Poppa Washington take care of all you medical bills - and the Congress might be emboldened enough to vote in more social benefits, courtesy of those of us who carry the load.

So when the next election rolls around, the conservative philosophy of making it on your own and taking care of yourself won't fly with those people. After all, Uncle Sam is taking care of us, why do we want this to change? So the Republican very well may promise them more free goodies to win votes.

The Democrats would have successfully changed conservative ideals.

The death of composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at the age of 35 may have been caused by complications stemming from strep throat, according to a Dutch study published on Monday. Since the composer's death in 1791, there have been various theories about the cause of his untimely end, from intentional poisoning, to rheumatic fever, to trichinosis, a parasitic disease caused by eating raw or undercooked pork.

Seriously, I don't remember a Prsident falling this fast so early in his first & hopefully last term.

He's pretty much on track with the last few POTUS's historically after six months. Here's a good link predicting this sort of drop:

"This is all completely predictable. Barack Obama didn't get elected with 60 or 65 percent of the vote -- he got elected with about 53 percent of the vote. As the warm and fuzzy feelings surrounding his inauguration wane and are replaced by an actual attempt to put forward a actual political agenda, it is not surprising that his approval ratings gravitate toward that anchor established during the election. "

Approval..

Widow selling husband's tomb above Marilyn Monroe

An American widow is selling her husband's burial spot directly above film legend Marilyn Monroe so that she can pay off her mortgage.

"Here is a once in a lifetime and into eternity opportunity to spend your eternal days directly above Marilyn Monroe ," says the advertisement.

"In fact the person occupying the address right now is looking face down on her."

Bidding for the plot opened at $500,000 and had reached $2.5 million by Sunday. No one from eBay was immediately available to comment on the bidding process or to give more details.

Manhattan Office Building Sales at Standstill: Report

Only three Manhattan office buildings worth more than $30 million were sold in the first half of year, as buyer and sellers failed to agree on pricing and credit stayed tight, according to a report by real estate services company CB Richard Ellis Group.

"Buyers are seeking distressed pricing," said the report released on Tuesday. "Owners do not want to sell at distressed pricing, and lenders have largely withdrawn from the market."

As Stocks Lose 'Sugar Rush,' Investors Turn More Cautious

Just like the abrupt end of a "sugar rush", financial markets are now coming down from this summer's cheap-money high, according to influential investors.

Renewed risk aversion has swept through global stock, bond, foreign exchange and commodity markets in recent days as signs of persistent weakness among U.S. consumers has dimmed the prospects of economic recovery.

U.S. stocks have been hit particularly hard by this shaken confidence, suffering their worst rout in seven weeks on Monday as investors doubted share prices could sustain current levels after a rise of 50 percent since March.

Anybody else notice the Geithner has vanished lately?

Hester still does not know where to line up, after being in the league for several years.

I think they will have a better defensive line, and they finally have a QB. But, they have no receivers and are thin at corner, so it's going to be a strange year. If the defense can make enough take aways, they should be competitive.

U.S. stock market pullback came on view rally overdone

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks on Tuesday offered a modest rebound after taking their strongest daily punch in six weeks, with some analysts chalking up the recent downturn in equities to overbought conditions versus a change in fundamentals.

"Prior to Monday's trading session stocks were up nearly 50% from the lows in March and higher by over 14% in the past five weeks. With these types of gains investors had begun to wonder if the stock market moved too far too fast and whether the improved economic reports justified the current trading level," said Robert Pavlik, chief market strategist, Banyan Partners LLC.

What "improved economic reports"? GDP is still contracting and jobs are still being destroyed.

Here's the payoff for the union support for Obama...with our money.

GM Recalls 1,350 Workers as It Adds Shifts, Overtime

Aug. 18 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Co. called back 1,350 union workers, its biggest one-time increase in jobs since 2006, as it boosts second-half production, partly in response to demand from the government’s “cash for clunkers” program.

GM will add shifts at the CAMI plant in Ontario, Canada, where the redesigned Chevrolet Equinox and all-new GMC Terrain are built, and Lordstown, Ohio, where it assembles the compact Chevrolet Cobalt, adding back United Auto Workers and Canadian Auto Workers union jobs as sales top expectations. The Ontario plant will be running at full capacity.

The recession is over,” said Erich Merkle, president of consulting firm Autoconomy in Grand Rapids, Michigan. “I think we’re going to get a bit of a drop-off as cash-for-clunkers runs its course, but I believe it will hand off to an economy that’s much stronger.”

Erich Merkle is certifiable.

Pain killers have been around for many, many decades in sports. They allow you to play with what you got. Steroids give you enhanced performance.

When you can play with an injury that should be causing too much pain to play, that is enhanced performance. And just because they've been around for years doesn't make it right. But the truth is, there probably wouldn't be much of an NFL if players couldn't use some kind of pain killers. How many of the starters can play 16 games injury free. I'm guessing about none. Its a violent game. So I see why the League has sort of a double standard.

Everybody is dinged up by week 2 or 3. With out pain killers you do not have a league. Same with baseball. I pitched 6 2/3s innings in college with a broken index finger on my pitching hand (caught a line drive back at my face bare handed and broke the finger on my 1st pitch of the game). We had absolutely no one else who could pitch.

I guarantee you I did not throw those innings with just coffee in the tank.

One time I got 6 pain killer shots in my pitching shoulder in a 4 week time span.

I had the pleasure (many years ago) of seeing Pat Metheny at the Indiana University Auditorium while I was in College. It was right after the "American Garage" album came out. The Auditorium is a reletivly small (3100 seats) venue where the IU school of music performed their larger productions, including opera and symphonys. The facility has excellent acoustics, and the show was a relevation. It was the first concert I remenmber attending where the quality of the sound exceeded that of a good listening room, while providing the excitment and energy of a live performance.

Yes!

Years back my wife went shopping for a new car. She loved the look of the Camaro but being very practical she thought she was ok with the lower insurance rates and mileage on the 6-C auto Firebird.

She was about to make a deal on the car when I suggested we at least test drive the real deal. 5-speed, V8.

She was used to driving a Datsun so, with the salesman in the front seat, she popped the clutch and left the lot burning rubber and thrown back against our seats... she let out a squeel that is only heard in the bedroom.

Yup, we bought the hot rod. Miss that car, and she does too!

re: #335 The Shadow Do

Shadow Do -

In 1967/8 - a friend of mine got his widowed mother to buy a GTO the same way. She didn't regret it, he didn't either.

Other things I miss about Jersey:

- A 24 hour Greek diner in every town. Sometimes 2 or 3.
- Jockey Hollow in Morristown, campground for Washington's army and a fantastic park with a bajillion trees.
- Taking the PATH train from Harrison into the NYC then up to 33rd street. Into the Blarney Rock for a Roast Beef on a Roll, Onion Rings and 2 bottles of Bud. Dash down to the Garden before the First Period of the nights Ranger Game.
- Bagel shops and Italian Delis in every town.
- Women with big hair who don't consider flip-flops to be a fashion accessory.

FYI for those who only know the jokes and skits. NJ is a GORGEOUS state, especially in the North. California is nice and all but I miss outdoor ice skating, Peter Lugar's and real pizza.

I got to ride in a '71 Challenger quite a lot and drove it on occasion. People always had nice things to say about it. Sometimes it was mistaken for a Barracuda, but nearly always it was, "Nice ride . . . they don't make 'em like that anymore" or a slight variation.

I love to go to the car shows and two weeks ago saw a very sweet icy blue T-Bird that I dearly coveted.

re: #312 jorline

The AMX was the product of a drunken one night stand between a Javelin and Gremlin on steroids.

The Javelin was a beautiful car. It had the classic "coke bottle" styling, like the 71-74 Charger. The longer wheelbase made more elegant than the AMX, though heavier and less performance oriented.

The engineering was unbelievably horrible, and we all knew it at the time.

If you wanted good engineering you had to blueprint (rebuild) the engine, the bias-ply tires were a joke in durability and handling in anything but a straight line, solid rear suspension meant you never really had what you'd call a good ride, had to keep adjusting the points and timing and plugs just to keep it running, big engines were unbelievably thirsty even at idle, cheap vinyl seats were the mode, not to mention landau roofs.

But it was fun anyway, and we were young.

Popcorn helps fight off cancer

POPCORN has become the latest food believed to have health-boosting properties.

The cinema snack contains "surprisingly large" amounts of healthy antioxidant plant chemicals called polyphenols, said scientists.

Tests showed the compounds account for 2.5 per cent of popcorn kernels by weight – higher levels than other a range of cereals.

Polyphenols – also found in fruits, vegetables, chocolate, wine, coffee and tea – protect the heart and cut cancer risk.

Dr Joe Vinson, from University of Scanton in Pennsylvania, said: "We were surprised by the levels of polyphenols we found in popcorn. I guess it's because it's not processed. You get all the wonderful ingredients of corn undiluted and protected by the skin. It's a good food."

Race cars out the door with breakin oil changed at 300 miles and again at 1000 and again at 2000, losing compression and burning oil by 25,000, need a valve job if not rebore cylinders by 50,000, and that's just for family driving, stress those pushrod engines and you rebuild at 10,000 just to keep it rolling - or trade it in on a Datsun 510.

If I could show my 1969 neighbors a 2009 Honda Accord, they'd think it was built by aliens (even compared to the Datsun!). Computer design, my friend, not to mention solid state ignition and engine computers, adjustable cams, reliable fuel injection, much better suspensions, much better tires, hell, much better radios, we won't even mention nav systems.

It's easy to look back with rose-colored glasses, but in engineering terms, those were the sad bad days that let the Japanese eat our lunch.

You can also turn it into mash, let it ferment for a month or two...then distill it and put it in a oak cask. Then in 10 or 20 years, pour out a nice glass of Scotch too.

I believe today's little Honda 2000 will smoke anything streetable built in Detroit before 1970, and keep doing it for 100k miles with hardly more than a few oil changes, while you'd burn up fifty Detroitmobiles, not to mention three times the gasoline, even trying to keep up. If you want four seats, there are a dozen Lexus and Infiniti models to suit, not to mention oddballs like the Subaru WRX, not to mention half the Mercedes line and some of the larger Beemers, yada yada. True, some of those cost. Old Porches can't touch new Porches, for that matter.

Modern automative engineering, 1960s can't touch it. Like the 100 kilohertz, punched card, mag tape, 16 kilobyte core memory computers of the era don't touch a modern Pentium, not even close, hard to imagine they're from the same planet.

According to this, 600 million people live in areas that will be affected.

Research presented March 10 at the International Scientific Congress on Climate Change in Copenhagen shows that the upper range of sea level rise by 2100 could be in the range of about one meter, or possibly more. In the lower end of the spectrum it looks increasingly unlikely that sea level rise will be much less than 50 cm by 2100.

Step one: Get out of the fucking middle ages when it comes to agriculture. If we didnt have 20 million slaves illegal aliens doing all the hard work we would have state of the art technology squeezing as much food out of as little land. We could have multi-story or even underground hydro/aeroponic farms and that is just the beginning.

Step Two: Put a muzzle on all the anti-corpate/anti-GM food moonbats that want to kill 2 billion people to "stick it to The Man®".

Agreed. GM crops will be vital to any attempt to reduce agriculture waste. We have to do things more efficently and having the crops do some of the work for us is a great place to start.

Well, I don't think we can change the climate "back", it is out of our control. I was thinking more along the lines of playing the cards that we are dealt. Our advances in medical technology, energy production, food production, water desalination, etc, will all be amazing in the next 50 years. Compare 1970 to today. What will 2050 look like? As long as GM crops are out in fields, and as long as pollen gets blown around by the wind, there are no true "non-gm" crops. After Hurricane Rita, a rice-broker that I know told me the European buyers were raising a stink about GM genes turning up in rice that wasn't supposed to be GM. Life finds a way, and that GM genie is out of the bottle.

Blame it on those damned Republican cavemen!

Study: global warming sparked by ancient farming methods

Ancient man may have started global warming through massive deforestation and burning that could have permanently altered the Earth's climate, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Virginia and the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.

The study, published in the scientific journal Quaternary Science Reviews and reported on the University of Virginia's Web site, says over thousands of years, farmers burned down so many forests on such a large scale that huge amounts of carbon dioxide were pumped into the atmosphere. That possibly caused the Earth to warm up and forever changed the climate.

[Lead author William] Ruddiman said that starting thousands of years ago, people would burn down a forest, poke a hole in the soil between the stumps, drop seeds in the holes and grow a crop on that land until the nutrients were tapped out of the soil. Then they would move on.

"And they'd burn down another patch of forest and another and another. They might do that five times in a 20-year period," he said.

Agriculture actually has a slightly better record in the US than manufacturing.
Still we could be better at increasing yields through biological innovation.
It's important to defend science education.

Rising Productivity

Between 1930 and 2000 U.S. agricultural output approximately quadrupled, while the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) index of aggregate inputs (land, labor, capital and other material inputs) remained essentially unchanged. Thus, multifactor productivity (output divided by all inputs) rose by an average of about 2 percent annually over this period. This rate substantially exceeds the rate of multifactor productivity growth in manufacturing, and the agricultural rate did not experience the slowdown that occurred in the rest of the U.S. economy during the last quarter of the century.[Link: eh.net...]

The big things holding back solar and wind as practical ways to supplement our energy needs are the energy densities of batteries. New batteries have been developed that surpass the needs of making the technology practical. We need now to work on getting the batteries mass-produced and the panels and wind farms installed. In of themselves, those technologies do not solve everything, but the could easily - as in the next five years if we really wanted to, take care of 15-30% of our energy needs depending on how aggressive we were in deployment.

My friend the right have been the deniers on this from the start.

The way that the left is anti science is to try to expand science to include things like alternative medicines and other hippy crystal related things.

The right just buries and obstructs science it doesn't like.

it only works when it blows...you can't store it, it is very expensive to build and tie into the grid...locally it might work, but it hasn't yet without massive govt subsidies...wind is a loser, even Pickens admits it

Are you suggesting that we cut off the market to India and/or China because they pollute too much? That would destroy their economies though. Perhaps we should sell them or give them green technology? I always shudder when I hear someone tell a 3rd World person they are better off living in a mud hut with no water or electricity because it's better for the planet. It's not better for them or their children.

I am suggesting carrot and stick - we will help you get green and if you don't we won't buy. Honestly though, if American citizens were real about this, then they wouldn't buy as much in the first place and then the Chinese and the Indians would have to change.

My friend the right have been the deniers on this from the start.

The way that the left is anti science is to try to expand science to include things like alternative medicines and other hippy crystal related things.

The right just buries and obstructs science it doesn't like.

And for the record, the right has seriously fucked up on taking big oil as a priority over the science.

Ok, let's build nuclear reactors now...all over the place. Let's build better, cleaner refineries that produce better and cleaner fuel.

The problem is we cannot, because those are both blocked by people claiming to love the planet. There is a political component to all of this that needs to be removed. It polarizes and makes any real progress possible. BOTH sides need to drop the idiocy and get going.

That's a good idea where India is concerned. In China's case any tech transfer is more problematic, given how it often gets funneled into weapons research over there.

I have listed nuclear first so many times I can no longer count. As to awareness, if people are faced with the choice of fourth gen reactors or the realities of future eco-collapse then they might change their minds. You are correct though in that the battle to get people thinking straight on this is difficult and that so far we are loosing.

Maybe. I just tried to look up the full article to get more info, but I can't seem to get to it.

Maybe you're just overestimating the frequency of forest fires because you live in Northern California? We don't seem to have them so much here in the East.

Maybe. We go through a long dry season out here. Back East it's green in the summer--which freaked me out when I moved to MA for college.

This show is available on DVD. The only thing that disappoints me is that it doesn't have the toy instruments section that's on the album... They must have played it live, since you can see some of the instruments on the stage (like under Mays' piano) at a few points. Cuong Vu the trumpeter has his own band and has several of his own albums out--highly recommended.

Evening.

I think the key is to allow all of the options to progress such as nuclear, wind, solar, etc. Then, the markets will decide which is the most efficient and cost effective. Given that they all will help mitigate clean air requirements. Competition will thus lead to the best source.

Activist Who Staged Gun Interview At Obama Event Was Prominent Defender Of '90s Militia

Ernest Hancock, the online radio host who staged an interview with an assault rifle-wielding associate at the Obama event in Arizona yesterday -- and was himself armed with a 9 millimeter pistol -- was a vocal supporter and friend of right-wing anti-government militia members who were convicted of conspiracy and weapons charges in the 90s.

And in an interview today with TPMmuckraker, Hancock said he still believes the Viper Militia case was "manufactured" by the same government that manufactured Waco and lied to its people about 9/11.

The federal government initially accused the Arizona Viper Militia of plotting to blow up federal buildings, which the twelve-member group cased on videotape.

In July 1996, after a grand jury indicted the suspects, federal agents "seized about 90 high-powered rifles and hundreds of pounds of a bomb-making compound from the shabby bungalow of a man whom officials identified as the ordnance specialist of a local paramilitary group," the New York Times reported at the time.

Wheee!
