I was in an Arabic class in which the teacher wondered why the Jews who dealt with the Holocaust would subject the Palestinians to “the wall”. I piped up and suggested that we move on to the actual lesson. Next day a nice elderly Englishwoman came up to me and asked, “why did you speak up, are you Jewish?”

I guess the moral of the story is, be glad your peers aren’t European.

My husband is learning Arabic the old fashioned way—using Rosetta Stone.
