Huh? Legal New Mexico driver’s license won’t suffice? And they’re not setting up “brown skin dragnets.” They can just ask about residency status after they’ve encountered you doing something illegal, correct? Really, cops aren’t anxious to do a ton of extra paperwork to harass folks who aren’t causing serious problems, generally.

Still, it’s best to have a passport handy if you’re from one of the states that doesn’t confirm legal status. It’s possible to get into an accident, for instance, and end up detained till the cops can confirm you are here legally.
