Once upon a time in the low Countries I was travelling with my family and another. We had to have our van back to Charles DeGaulle airport by 1045pm, Naturaly the GPS the rental car gave us coked out but we had all to to get back from Amsterdam. Wife has the map but soon I realize I’m watching A Bridge Too Far. Eindhoven, Nijmegen, and when I saaw a sign for Arnhem I knew we were going the wrong way. Anyway I put my foot on the floor and didn’t take it off until we got near the airport with minutes to spare. At times we got up to 180 km/hr (about 112 mph) but remained consistently over 160 the rest of the way. Fortunately they don’t seem to have state troopers in Belgium and France.

I have only been pulled over once by the police in Western Europe, unless you count being stopped at a static checkpoint.

For that, all cars have front license plates and the police rely on speed and traffic cameras to nail offenders. So if it was a rental car and you were leaving the country, the owners might have received a notice at some point, but you would’ve been long gone.
