Nope. Well, let me take that back. The south had more slaves in volume, but there were plenty of slave owners in the north. The South was agrarian, they had more numbers to work the land.

There were a lot of people all through the USA who supported and/or benefited from slave ownership. There were a lot of people all through the USA who were also appalled by slave ownership. It was a largely moral issue. I suspect for it’s day it was a morally defining issue, sort of like abortion is today. It is entirely possible people will be looking back on today’s world with the same sort of simplistic, 20/20 hindsight about our present society’s support of abortion that we now look back at the Nineteenth Century’s support of slavery.
