In health insurance, companies can know, definitively, that a person is going to cost more in the long run than they will ever pay. Moreover, someone getting sick in some significant ways— like cancer— means that it’s very likely they’ll be getting sick like that again. They insurance company has every incentive to deny that persons claims and to get them off their rolls if they can.

Health insurance companies suck at providing health insurance to sick people. They’re great at doing it for healthy people.

I apologize if this comes out sounding like a Tea Party line, but what’s not to say that beancounters could as well cause these sort of problems should the United States adopt a single-payer system?
