Apropos of something, a late lamented pal of mine who was a native San Franciscan once told me that on the day the attack on Pearl Harbor was attacked, he and his two brothers got together over many drinks and pondered about which service they should join that would have the least chance of getting them killed. So they chose the Coast Guard, thinking they’d be safely guarding the coast . Wouldn’t you know it, but within a couple of months they were all shipped off to the Pacific. Fortunately, they all made it out alive.

Many of the landing craft (ducks) that took our soldiers ashore under fire were manned by Coast Guard.
