“Race” is a hot-button.

Too bad it’s not a concept that makes sense.

If anything this hot-button is about speaking English versus not.

A very tiny fraction of my ancestors spoke English before 1600. Their children picked up English as a way to live. I only know of a handful of my ancestors who came over from England.

This whole issue is part of the politics of America in the last half of the 20th century, when in the US we decided to want to lower labor costs by welcoming, or at least not closing the door to, millions of people from Mexico and Central America.

And they didn’t speak English, and they are sort of brown. Which makes them the “other”, so now they are the enemy or something.

Which is useful to the folks who brought them into the country in the first place.
