Well, you’ve got at least two things on your side in NM: lower population density and a strong libertarian leaning on such matters.

I’ve actually enjoyed driving through NM on my trips b/w Houston and L.A. Rough land with a stark beauty. Can see what attracts artists. But then there are huge dairy farms and feedlots just off I-10 that ruin a 50-mile stretch every time. Suddenly smells like someone threw 100 lbs of Limburger cheese in your car.
