This was bound to happen, but they held out for maximum timing effect. Trump will not be able to play this down at the debates. Nor can any other GOP candidates distance themselves from it…the albatross around their necks is really starting to stink.

It’s far too late for the GOP to distance themselves from Trump now - it’s practically October and a wee bit over a month to go before the elections. If the GOP leadership issued the “abandon ship, it’s every man for himself” call now, it’d all end in a GOP rout as the Trumpian base punishes the party for abandoning the President.

They must be feeling like the doomed passengers and crew of the RMS Titanic right about now. The only thing they can do now is pray for a miracle….except that unusual popping sound - the sound of straining steel and the cracking of deck planking - is probably quite distracting.
