But there are those of us, and I’m among them, who would prefer to see marriage remain as the religious committment, and have the state provide, to everyone, gay or straight, a “civil union”. Those wanting a religious ceremony who belong to a church willing to grant the religious marriage in addition to the civil union, would be able to do it.

Then civil unions should convey 100% of the legal right of marriage and right now they do not. As long as civil unions are not legally equal to marriage, supporting civil unions over marriage is supporting inequality.
