Maybe “punishment” is the wrong word but nothing better comes to mind. (Maybe “Penalty” would be better.) Universities depend a lot on funding from alumni programs and by not being allowed to consider whether a family has been a good customer or not is a financial punishment.

There has to be a decent reason in order for the federal government to disallow something and I don’t think “because you’re probably white” is a good enough reason.

In Korea, there was a scandal a while back when it was exposed that schools were essentially accepting bribes to admit students of “legacy” families whose qualifications were low.

Isn’t what you’re talking about the same thing? How do you see addressing a lack of class mobility when you have mechanisms that assure inequity in access to higher education?
