Another Islamic center was built in downtown Houston, Texas in 2002.
No uproar, even though is was 2002! and Texas!

Houston National Bank remained in the building at 212 Main until 1964 when it merged with Tennessee Bank and Trust Co. and moved to the Tenneco Building on Milam. The Downtown Bank moved into the Main Street building, restored the interior and renamed the institution Franklin Bank. In March 1975, however, the Franklin Bank went into receivership and the building became vacant. For almost 20 years, it remained unused. In 1994 Houston Rockets basketball star, Hakeem Olajawon purchased the building and made plans to turn it into an Islamic center.

After years of extensive renovation (which maintained most of the original features), the center opened in 2002. It is now used as an Islamic mosque and educational center named Islamic Da’wah Center. The vast banking hall has been converted into the center’s main prayer hall, which can easily accommodate 1,200 people for prayers. In the basement level are a gathering area, meeting rooms, classrooms, a guest suite, offices, a recreational facility, a kitchen and a library of Islamic literature. The Da’wah Center hopes one day to install a gallery of Islamic architecture on the mezzanine circling the main floor.http://houston.bizjournals.com/houston/stories/2008/09/15/story15.html
