In part it’s because a capitalist meritocracy keeps score by wealth. Though I’d argue that a non-meritocracy system would arguably be worse since it’d probably fall back on an aristocracy or caste system given human preference for arbitrary tribal distinctions and I guess a need to feel superior to someone else by default.

I’d argue that there are plenty of not-rich douchebags, the wealthy ones are just more prominent.
