Oh he’s still pretty left wing but he is also smart enough to realize that on some issues, being far left just won’t cut it. I think he is taking a page from Bill Clinton’s playbook. He understands the stakes and knows that if he panders to the moveon.org crowd, he’s sure to lose support among the centrists. This is a smart calculation in the game of political calculus.

If it’s not too late to respond, I think Obama is doing exactly this. He’s trying to support the Republicans. Not a bad idea at all.

Obama was firm on 4 things in the campaign, healthcare, taxes, education, energy. The taxes I’m more concerned about, particularly his pledge to lower taxes for the middle class. If nothing changes, I think he’ll still be ok, but if he raises them, Democrats are going to be pissed. Way more pissed.

At any rate, these four things he wants to change and hard enough for anyone to take on in 4 years. The rest of the stuff, he’s willing to support the Right. As a liberal, I’m not happy about the Patriot Act at all, but I understand what he’s doing and I’m ok with it.
