The Man Who Would Not Be Washington: Robert E. Lee’s Civil War and His Decision That Changed American History, by Jonathan Horn (Scribner, 384 pp., $28)

Shrug. Never understood the fascination with someone who failed to do what was right and failed as a general when it mattered most. Old “Fuss & Feathers” Winfield Scott was just as much a Virginian and made first the right choice and then expressed the strategy that would, in the end, bring the traitors to their knees. Scott was a better man and far better General who deserves to be more well known today.
