Russia is not the USSR, and although it shares certain goals with the USSR such as a will to reunite as much of the old Russian/Soviet empire as it can, it is not spreading a world ideology, just pursuing its somewhat more limited national interests.

I disagree. Russia under Putin is wanting to spread an ideology- a world ruled by mobsters through chaos.

Russia is causing chaos for a reason. They want to spread crony-capitalism and a Mafia style power structure to further a worldwide plutocracy. This will allow Putin to do anything he wants, from expanding territory to enriching his own personal cronies and pet corporations. Putin’s world is a top-down enrichment program (sound familiar, Republicans?) where ordinary Russians are sacrificed under sanctions to advance the interests of the elite. Rampant nationalism is the fuel Putin pours on the dumpster fire that is his rule. Utter internal corruption and a huge percentage of Russian wealth being stashed and hidden overseas define Russia’s economy.. again, a Republican dream.
