Did El Paso make a mistake in ignoring the vitriol directed against it?

…In May [2017], several hard-line anti-immigrant Trump operatives, including Tom Tancredo, Kris Kobach, and Steve Bannon, traveled to the El Paso area to organize the building of a privately financed, crowdfunded border wall. A quarter-mile barrier was quickly erected, lit up at night, and publicized nationally. The politicos spewed more inflammatory rhetoric about immigrants.

In July, Kobach, Bannon, and Tancredo returned to the El Paso area to tout the new wall along with Donald Trump Jr.

No protests ensued.

People find it hard to take these threats seriously until they see their own die. I’m sorry, but really it can be true.

But by that same token, we’re seeing people, especially latin people, wake up to the hate that _is_ the GOP and realize that only their vote can change things.

We are in the midst of another cold war; a cold civil war to be sure, but it remains a war just as certainly as there was a war between the US and the USSR was from 1945 to 1989. If the side of the angels can win a second time in a row, I will only be grateful…

Very possible; the question I have is regarding the US vs Russia part - do you see that given their work for the GOP side of things? They seem to be making the mistake of seeing us, rather than China, as their biggest enemy…

Being old enough to have been a trooper in the previous Cold War, I am nervous about this. Just because a war is fairly cold does not mean serious numbers of casualties.

The Cold War was between the USA and the USSR…two world ideologies clashing for dominance

Russia is not the USSR, and although it shares certain goals with the USSR such as a will to reunite as much of the old Russian/Soviet empire as it can, it is not spreading a world ideology, just pursuing its somewhat more limited national interests.

I would also like to revisit your statement that the “angels” won the Cold War the first time.

The West won because the Soviet economy was unsustainable and collapsed. The state was no longer in a position to bail it out.

The only thing keeping any sort of human face on Western Capitalism was the fact that it was in competition with the Socialist model. Once its competitor was gone, it immediately showed its ugliest neoliberal side.

And it also collapsed in 2008, requiring a government bailout to keep it viable.

At some point it will collapse to the point that no government can bail it out.

Slight objection - you are presuming that the Russian have not adopted the same ideology that they previously fought in the Great Patriotic War. That remains to be seen to me…

I do not see them spreading a world ideology like Communism, but they do want to restore the old Soviet Empire. That is enough of a threat to the Baltic States, Poland and all the other former Soviet republics.

And they have the massive ethnic Russian diaspora spread throughout those states, their own Sudetendeutsch that they can use as a lever.

That is a reasonable comment. However, I would argue that it was in fact the side of angels in this case simply because of how much we had been embarrassed by the deaths of WWII. The Red Vietnamese kicking the Khmer Rouge out didn’t help either. Still… Ask me tomorrow when I’ve slept on it…

That’s one way to look at it.

Or, we could say that a one-party state values the party over the state; it’s so focused on maintaining its own power, it prevents any accrual of power by internal competitor parties who are better equipped to handle that moment’s challenges.

A one-party state, rather than let another party have a turn, would see the state crumble and burn to ensure that it would be them ruling the ashes.

.

Also, in a state where authority flows from the top down, responsibility must also flow from the bottom up. But to admit error is to undermine authority. Chernobyl showed us the consequences of that approach.

There was an old joke about a Soviet fellow who got eleven years for calling Brezhnev an idiot: one year for undermining Soviet authority and ten years for disclosing state secrets…

His supporters are going to be there in force to teach some “respect” to the counter-protesters.

There is no way it won’t get ugly, and likely lead to confrontation and ultimately to violence. And as soon as that starts, it will be mutual recriminations and an endless spiral of counter-accusations.

And the press will both-sider it for all it’s worth.

I am less worried these days of how things will look to DT and the GOP.
First, the right will see what they want to see anyway. Or, outright lie about what happened. Note their hand wringing about the campaign contribution tweet.
Second, the left needs to speak/act their mind, to speak to their own base and ideals.

This has helped my get out of the maggot filled heads of the debased GOP.

I disagree. Russia under Putin is wanting to spread an ideology- a world ruled by mobsters through chaos.

Russia is causing chaos for a reason. They want to spread crony-capitalism and a Mafia style power structure to further a worldwide plutocracy. This will allow Putin to do anything he wants, from expanding territory to enriching his own personal cronies and pet corporations. Putin’s world is a top-down enrichment program (sound familiar, Republicans?) where ordinary Russians are sacrificed under sanctions to advance the interests of the elite. Rampant nationalism is the fuel Putin pours on the dumpster fire that is his rule. Utter internal corruption and a huge percentage of Russian wealth being stashed and hidden overseas define Russia’s economy.. again, a Republican dream.

That’s not the only ideology Russia is committed to spreading. Due to the way they interpret Scripture, they’re also the most virulent and violent heteronormative crusaders in 3 or 4 centuries—and considering that most societies for the past 1800 years have been very heteronormative anyway, that’s a very high bar to clear. The only possible comparison is—yeah, to the guys they fought in the Great Patriotic War. And at “least” the Nazis didn’t have a religious drive for beating and then killing me and mine. Their weak supporters could be ‘reasoned with’, in terms of “beat them in war, imprison them for a few years, and they might stop actively pursuing their hatreds”.

When it’s religious, it’s an existential issue and either they or I quite likely have to die if they can’t be converted.

By the last few years of the SU, the ideology had corrupted into the nursery of the mafiosi. That’s why it died with relatively little bloodshed, for all the passion of its early years.

Soviet ideology taught that Capitalists are like birds of prey, swooping down on the marketplace, scooping up as much as they can before flying off again.

The post-Soviet business people embraced that with a passion.

And of course, there were the oligarchs, a class created to “protect” Russia from being simply bought out by outside interests, the fate that befell East Germany and other large parts of Eastern Europe.

In exchange for being allowed to buy up a large share of Russia’s key industries at bargain-bin prices, they had to promise that they would toe the political line for Putin.

That’s not the only ideology Russia is committed to spreading.

They have a deep theocratic streak, seeing Russian Orthodoxy as the only True Christianity, the “Third Rome”, after the fall of Rome and Byzantium, and “A Fourth Rome There Shall Not Be” (why? because they say so, I guess)

And Putin is perfectly happy to hitch his wagon to these Patriarchs, allowing them a great deal of political power and influence, as well as a financial support, in order to promote his social and political agenda.

Greets and saluts from the great repository of FEC data that is publicly available. In this database, we learn that GOPers are ashamed of donating to Trump, but Democrats don’t seem to have a problem with their donor lists being public.

In this database we learn that Maggie and other “journalists” are concerned about donations being public, but Maggie also led charge to publicize the donors to the Clinton Foundation as a huge scoop.

Excuse me if I don’t grab a fainting couch fast enough.

This is the dumbfuckery we’re dealing with even as Trump resumes his racist bulkshit by attacking Beto and his stochastic terrorist routine ratchets up another notch by lying about Bernie and Warren and their role in Dayton (hint: there is zero role; neither exhorted or encouraged violence, while Trump actively encouraged, enraged, and condoned his racist followers to act on their violent fantasies).

Fox continues doing what they have always done - deflect and project. Trump too.

And the rest of the media plays magic balance fairy.

Maybe it isn’t so bad if that sweet meteor of death comes.

Or someone hits the reset button because we’ve hit our blue screen of death.

As a student of Russian history, Putin is in what was called the Slavophile divide of the Russian elite. He’s the opposite of Peter the Great and to a smaller extent Catherine the Great. He sees Russia whether through it’s Orthodoxy, the USSR, etc as needing to be a world power. He disdains western liberalism whether that’s democracy, multiculturalism, or social liberalism. The irony to me is how he through his proxies like Trump or his European allies tries to portray himself as a champion of the Western world and the dumbasses on the right buy it and spread it because they disdain a lot of our system. Now how he convinces gullible leftists is beyond me. Putin imo is blatantly imperialistic which is supposed to be why Greenwald and Oliver Stone hate our FP.

Putin has generated a lot of fans on the Left who wee him as a bulwark against Western Capitalism and all the evils it engenders and at the same time a lot of fans on the Right who see him as a bulwark against liberal moral corruption envy his authoritarian, oligarchic, theocratic state.

And those two factions fall into a mutual feedback cycle that keeps propping up useful figures like Bernie and Tulsi.

He has so destabilized us that he is pretty much free to do whatever he wants to (or can, given his circumstances) without any major interference.

re: #64 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

Putin has generated a lot of fans on the Left who wee him as a bulwark against Western Capitalism and all the evils it engenders and at the same time a lot of fans on the Right who see him as a bulwark against liberal moral corruption envy his authoritarian, oligarchic, theocratic state.

And those two factions fall into a mutual feedback cycle that keeps propping up useful figures like Bernie and Tulsi.

He has so destabilized us that he is pretty much free to do whatever he wants to (or can, given his circumstances) without any major interference.

That’s not my question. You’re answering what. I’m asking why. There’s nothing about Putin that suggests he’s a champion against unregulated capitalism or imperialism. Tulsi and Sanders are useful idiots to be sure but what I’m stumped as to is why.

Putin is doing what he thinks will preserve/expand Russian power and those of the oligarchs that dominate Russia. Chaos in the West allows Russians to expand their influence without interference, investigation, prosecutions, etc., and having Democrats fend off fights from the likes of Gabbard weakens the Democrats ahead of the fight with Trump, who does their bidding even without realizing he’s helping Russia (and I think he knows, but just doesn’t care).

Beto did better than any Texas Dem Senate candidate had in years. The Dems gained House seats in Texas. And three Texas House Republicans have retired. Yeah Beto isn’t polling well but that doesn’t make him wrong. I bet Trump is so full of himself that he doesn’t even know EP is Betos hometown. Fuck that - Demand McConnell allow the House gun control package come to floor for a vote. He can’t and wont do that, even though that’s the easiest thing imaginable. On Monday, we noted that they had devalued their currency, such that it now takes more than 7 yuan to buy one dollar. However, reader B.B. in Everett, WA, who is an economist, points out that characterization is not quite correct. The yuan’s value sank as a result of normal macroeconomic forces, particularly Donald Trump’s new round of tariffs (for a primer on the issue, click here). And so, the devalued yuan was not a result of any action by the Xi administration, it was the result of their inaction in choosing not to prop up the currency. Columbia economist and CNN contributor Jeffery Sachs concurs with B.B., and even goes further, declaring that the only “economic manipulator” here is the Trump administration.

Actually, I don’t know what “Yield curve is at too wide a margin” means, either. “Yield curve” is a graph of interest rates for different time periods. It’s not clear what “margin” refers to in this context, but most likely “Net interest margin”, which is the difference between the interest banks pay for deposits and what they charge for loans. But I don’t see that the terms have much to do with one another. I’ve looked online to see if there’s any commentary on what’s being talked about, and haven’t succeeded.

Texas to loosen firearm laws, allowing guns in churches and on school grounds

A series of new firearm laws will go into effect in Texas next month — further loosening gun restrictions in a state that’s had four of the 10 deadliest mass shootings in modern US history.

The laws — passed before a gunman massacred 22 people and injured dozens in El Paso last weekend — will make it easier to have guns in a state with some of the most lax weapons restrictions in the nation.

Wake up check the news and see how Trump continues Pete Wilson’s legacy of killing the GOP in California.

Orange County, long a Republican stronghold, has officially turned blue.

The county that nurtured Ronald Reagan’s conservatism and is the resting place of Richard Nixon is now home to 547,458 registered Democrats, compared with 547,369 Republicans, according to statistics released early Wednesday morning by the county Registrar of Voters. And the number of voters not aligned with a political party has surged in recent years, and now tops 440,770, or 27.4% of the county’s voters.

Democratic leaders attributed the shift to changing demographics, aggressive recruitment efforts and President Trump.

“Trump’s toxic rhetoric and exclusionary policies alienate women, millennials, suburban voters, immigrants and people of color — critical components of the electorate in Orange County,” said Katerina Ioannides, chairwoman of the Orange County Young Democrats, which conducted voter registration drives aimed at young voters, one of several groups that worked to increase party registration. “The Republican Party’s platform no longer resonates in a rapidly diversifying, increasingly college-educated Orange County.”

Among registered voters in Texas, the survey found that 49 percent would vote for O’Rourke in next year’s general election while only 38 percent would choose Trump.

This unusual advantage for a Democrat in Texas is owed to O’Rourke’s support in the poll among independents, who break for him by wide margins over Trump.

Not at all terrifying.

Report warns of possible mass casualties from automotive cyberattacks

Warnings about connected vehicle vulnerabilities have been a steady drumbeat for years. Now a consumer-advocacy group is putting it in starker terms, suggesting a mass cyberattack against such vehicles could lead to Sept. 11-level casualties.

California-based Consumer Watchdog has issued a 49-page report that paints the dire picture and urges automakers to install 50-cent “kill switches” to allow vehicles to be disconnected from the Internet. The report highlights numerous widely reported instances of remote vehicle hacking, such as a 2015 demonstration involving a Jeep Cherokee left crawling along a St. Louis-area freeway.

“Millions of cars on the internet running the same software means a single exploit can affect millions of vehicles simultaneously. A hacker with only modest resources could launch a massive attack against our automotive infrastructure, potentially causing thousands of fatalities and disrupting our most critical form of transportation,” the group warns.

The report highlights what it describes as the key security flaw in connected vehicles, noting that the potential vulnerability is growing because of the increasing number of such vehicles on the roads.

More traditional Episcopalians do the kneeling aerobics…that’s me. Others stand, or sit in the pews, or do the “half-kneel,” butt on the seat, knees on the kneeler.

The city of El Paso just experienced a white supremacist terrorist massacre of Hispanic people. Naming and shaming San Antonio people who have paid the maximum legal allegiance to the fucking patron saint of that massacre, whose words inspired the very manifesto the murderer wrote? It’s not a fucking hit list. It’s a message to people of San Antonio and everywhere else that, in the year 2019, these donors are people you might not be safe around. You might not be safe doing business with them. They might look the other way if they see you being abused or falling victim to crime in front of them. Cambria went GOP much later. I think Bush carried it in 2004 and it’s been redder since. Funnily that was the first election none of my family lived there. My Grand Aunt and Uncle died in 2001. Grandmas still got cousins there tho and Grabdpas got a niece. And I’ve got tons of distant cousins too on my Dad’s side too.

My farther’s side of the family is from Cambria County as well.

Not sure what the local economy is based on anymore with the major reduction in the steel industry (Johnstown) and the associated coal production in the surrounding area. If I recall correctly the county demographics is that it’s one of those 95% white areas and if there is any minority concentration it’s probably around Johnstown.

That the area is going redder is an indication that their history regarding how the know nothings treated the immigrants there has been forgotten. Which is unfortunate.

Hell, I remember when word got out that among the things that the newly-created DHS would be allowed to look at under the Patriot Act was what books you’d checked out from the library. And how, like so many other such items that came up after the initial spike of shock and outrage died down from 9/11, the wingnuts made the same excuse over and over again: “If you’ve got nothing to hide, you’ve no reason to be afraid.”

There are times it’s hard to believe that this was the same paper that publicly apologized for getting the reporting on Iraq so badly wrong. The paper that decided that to avoid needing to issue such an apology in the future…they’d fire their Public Editor and return to the policy that reporters and editors do not answer to their readers. A policy that has done wonders…for their competitors.

They only apologised after Judith Miller was exposed and hundreds of thousands of deaths were laid at their feet. They didn’t grow a conscious.

They have not yet apologised for endorsing Herr Hitler.

They condemned comparisons of apartheid in South Africa with treatment of Palestinians in the Occupied Territories back in 2017.

In the story of the continuing decline of the California Republican Party, this may be a harbinger of the end:

The county that nurtured Ronald Reagan’s conservatism and is the resting place of Richard Nixon is now home to 547,458 registered Democrats, compared with 547,369 Republicans, according to statistics released early Wednesday morning by the county Registrar of Voters. And the number of voters not aligned with a political party has surged in recent years, and now tops 440,770, or 27.4% of the county’s voters.

Granted, many of those independents may still vote for a Republican, but the national GOP has used Orange County as a fundraising hub for the last couple of decades while writing off the statewide races. This likely means they’re going to have a harder time fundraising there

Your Radical Republicans in action:

The chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee is facing accusations of anti-Semitism for a fundraising letter that claims Michael Bloomberg, Tom Steyer and George Soros “bought” control of Congress for Democrats.

News of the letter signed by Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) comes months after House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) made a similar claim in a now-deleted tweet.

According to an American Jewish World report last week, the letter appears to have been sent in March. It states that “the news of impactful, real progress on turning our nation around was undercut by biased media and hundreds of millions of dollars of anti-Republican propaganda put out by liberal special interests, funded by deep-pocketed far-left billionaires George Soros, Tom Steyer and Michael Bloomberg.”

Halie Soifer, executive director of the Jewish Democratic Council of America, called on Emmer to retract and apologize for the letter. “This week, we have witnessed the devastating consequences of propagating hate targeting any minority group,” Soifer said, in a reference to the mass shooting in El Paso over the weekend. “Unlike the Republican Jewish Coalition, we have been willing to call out anti-Semitism wherever it may occur, including on our side of the aisle. We call on the Republican Jewish Coalition and Republican leadership to do the same thing.”

Hint to Halie—Not one RepubliKKKlan will rebuke the contents of Emmer’s message.

A Republican county official in Pennsylvania has resigned after writing Facebook posts calling NFL players who protest during the national anthem “baboons” and “ignorant blacks.”

Carla Maloney, who served as secretary of the Beaver County Republican Committee, wrote in a resignation letter Friday that her posts were “distasteful, inappropriate and insensitive.

“Tired of these over paid ignorant blacks telling me what I should believe in. I will tell you what I believe in and that is our Flag the National Anthem and America period end of story,” she wrote in one post. “You don’t like it here go to Africa see how you like it there. We are all Americans not African American not Hispanic American. WE ARE ALL AMERICAN.”

Maloney wrote in another comment, “Steelers are now just as bad as the rest of the over paid (sic) baboons. You respect your flag, country and our national anthem … Let’s see how the baboons get paid when white people stop paying their salaries.”“

Oh I sent a link to Chuck Woolery awaiting his comment…

He won’t consider it racist and I’m glad the Steelers lost her bigoted ass as a fan.

I wonder how much choice the victims had to say that they wouldn’t meet with Trump.

The comment you’re likely to get is a block notice. Facts must be ignored to support faith.

At least for now, they’re not killing heretics.

Somewhere between “not much” and “none”.

I’m quite sure the victims were vetted in advance first so they didn’t get someone who would condemn him on television.

If I was in such a position, I’d be such a cheerleader for Trump’s advance team they’d want to put me right up front, because I speak fluent wingnut.

Get him in the room, then let ‘er rip against him.

Right-wingers thrilled that the Dayton killer was apparently into both mass murder and leftwing politics so they can play their favorites games of “whatabout” and “bothsides”.

The ol’ hyphenated American comment that Woodrow Wilson used in his bigotry.

She’s just upset she was caught, not that she wrote it.

And that good ol’ “go back to Africa” comment from the “I’m not a racist” crowd using that phrase for 150 years.

re: #310 stpaulbear

I don’t know.

I hope to never be in that situation (1. victim of mass shooting; and 2) be injured/grieving from death/injury of loved one in a mass shooting and have Trump try to meet with me).

I would politicize the fuck out of it. I’d call him a stochastic terrorist to his face. I’d say he’s incited right wing extremists to act on their violent fantasies, and I’d urge everyone else who has been a victim of gun violence to politicize the fuck out of it - and say I’m within my rights to do it. If not today, then for every other mass shooting and act of gun violence since the expiration of the assault weapons ban and the failure to act on gun control measures over the past 30 years. The GOP and NRA own that. They own the body count because it’s within our control to reduce gun violence. Every other country can do it.

Every state with strong gun control has low per capita gun death rates. It works. It reduces health care costs. It reduces crime. It’s common sense, and the GOP/NRA response is to suggest more guns and armed guards volunteering to stand outside every school, mall, and public space? No one is volunteering to do that and has the qualifications or skills to act in an active shooter situation. Open carry states just witnessed back to back mass shootings, and no one was deterred by guns.

Heck, the NRA president claims she needs armed police securing her home from threats, which I find somewhat comical. What kind of threats? Gun owners who are the good guys until they aren’t? Domestic terrorists who have easy access to guns thanks to the NRA? Or, is it the realization that right wing domestic terrorists have already acted on their violent fantasies urged on by Trump and wonder if some left wing analogue would do the same?

re: #304 BlueGrl21

Yes, I have met a white supremacist. One is a border patrol agent in my orbit. One is my uncle. One is a woman who goes after my best friend (Filipina) on social media for fun. I know one, friend of a friend, who is deeply into apartheid, dude has a college degree in political science. I went to high school with several. I dated one in my youth for about a month. That’s all it took.

Better BET they’re real.

A former friend from high school basically checks off all the boxes, but other friends say “but he’s married to a Puerto Rican woman….” There’s a subset of men who marry women they assume will be subservient to them, usually East Asian though.
