Another reason I was hoping it would be her as opposed to a senator from a swing state (too risky given low-turnout special elections) or a governor (they’ve got their hands full dealing with the pandemic).

Senate replacements don’t get special elections. Usually governor gets to appoint someone until the next federal election. So, if all goes right, Harris’s replacement will be up in 2022, which is when the term was set to expire anyway.

I wonder what Newsom’s list will look like for a potential Harris replacement. Alex Padilla is Secretary of State and Betty Yee is Controller, those are the only two statewide officials that are termed out of their offices in 2022. And of course, there’s a potential deep bench among the House, State Senate, and Assembly caucuses.
