There’s going to be a period between now & the elections, when every single right-wing nutjob, hack, crank & shitposter gets censored by social media or tech companies and immediately starts screaming to the heavens about “MAH FREEDUMZ!!!”

I’m not posting to the article, because Drudge did that already, so they’re already getting that sweet, sweet pagehit. But here’s a tweet from one of the RWNJs desperately suckling the teat of freakazoid attention-posing

Jim Hoft, the stupidest man on the internet, haz some thots:

I don’t know who Jessi Melton is, but if she’s willing to freely tie herself to Loomer, then she deserves to be exiled from civil society and treated with the disdain and contempt that such associations will bring, after Trumpism comes crashing down …

It’s not like the rest of the world wants Putin there. It’s not like there’s a global pandemic and the US is doing worse than most on containment and the body count.

Trump’s actively sabotaging the nation’s health and safety to thunderous approval of … Putin and the Trumpist cult members (aka the GOP).

Citing crowd-control concerns, the Austin location cancels police contract.

AUSTIN, Texas (BRAIN) — Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop Austin will no longer will sell bicycles to the Austin Police Department because of concerns over officers using them to control Black Lives Matter protesters.

The Austin Police Department has for months used bicycles to block protesters from roadways, according to WTBC-TV Fox 7 in Austin. The downtown area police command has more than 150 bicycle patrol officers.

Former stripper, lol. Also, she is favored to win the primary.

Florida’s GOP primary race in District 22 has taken a turn for the worse, as Jessica Melton has now begun to hypocritically attack her opponents by accusing one of them of paying for press coverage and “defying social distancing restrictions.”

This attack by Melton can widely be seen as a desperate move to deflect from her self-inflicted political missteps, including her numerous run-ins with law enforcement, her past DWI, and her previous job as a “stripper.” Melton has been trying to keep these issues under wraps and has even denied ever having been arrested when asked by former supporters.

Republican legislators in Idaho warned of abuses of power and concerns about totalitarianism as they pushed to take away health districts’ ability to close schools due to the coronavirus, the Idaho Statesman reports.

Said state Sen. Steven Thayn (R): “Listening to the experts to set policy is an elitist approach. I’m fearful of an elitist approach. I am also fearful it leads to totalitarianism, especially when you say, ‘We are doing it for the public good

When they don’t do what we want we’ll take away their power

Would DC most likely elect two Democrats to the Senate? Based on registration in the District, almost certainly.

Would Puerto Rico elect two Democrats to the Senate? Nobody really knows. The Republican and Democratic Parties don’t really exist on the island the way they do in the States and DC. Almost all Puerto Rican politics is based on the statehood/commonwealth/independence issue. Everything else is basically secondary. If/when that issue is resolved, how the electorate aligns is almost anyone’s guess. You can’t even really base much off of the primaries because the parties have gone back and forth between caucuses and primaries the last few cycles and have often been later in the process, meaning lower turnout.

56
KGxvi  Aug 11, 2020 • 12:15:50pm

One more point, though it’s been made countless times before, about the GOP opposition to DC/PR statehood:

when they say they’d never win, it’s an admission that their politics/policies aren’t popular and they’re unwilling to be responsive to the electorate in order to get elected.

Comment to Breitbart by a Comcast spokesperson:

We are reaching out to the campaign and have made a technical fix that will resolve this issue within 24 hours. We are continuously working to protect our customers from potential security threats. In this case, our security platform - which leverages widely used third-party threat-intelligence services - flagged the texting provider used by Laura Loomer’s campaign as a potential threat. Anyone using this texting provider would have had the same experience, not only with our service, but with any security service using similar threat-intelligence lists. The security alert had nothing to do with the content or sender of any communication.

As a worker at one of the tech giants, I can accept this as an utterly reasonable explanation. Security at scale is hard. Why don’t conservatives understand technology? (Or anything, for that matter?)

Apparently, no: according to Wikipedia:

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates there were 60.8 million cases, 274,000 hospitalizations, and 12,469 deaths in the United States due to the virus.[117]

Isn’t the mortality rate supposed to be .02% — which is in line with 60 million cases and 12K deaths. Fortunately, 2009 H1N1 was not a particularly lethal flu; there have been far more deaths with other flus.

re: #90 Jay C

Apparently, no: according to Wikipedia:

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates there were 60.8 million cases, 274,000 hospitalizations, and 12,469 deaths in the United States due to the virus.[117]

(Figures vary, but this is basically the toll for all of 2009: from April)

I stand corrected I thought the real number was like 6 million but I guess I got a decimal off in my head somewhere.

I guess it’s because I you know, lived during that time, and heard absolutely nothing about H1N1 after May 2009. I myself had it at end of April-beginning of May 2009. It was, in my case, just a normal flu. That number just *feels* like complete horseshit. I’ve always felt Republicans (and Al Qaren) trying to compare COVID to H1N1-2009 in any way was asinine though.

It’s disingenuous of him (I know.. a Republican… SHOCKED) to not be comparing death rates though.

60 million cases, 12k deaths, 274k hospitalizations.

That’s a fraction of the mortality rate or hospitalization rate of covid19.

Not to mention the significant differences between the H1N1 flu virus and SARS-CoV-2 in terms of transmissability, reaction to treatment, resistance to treatment, mortality, etc.. ISTM to be a real apples-to-oranges comparison (but then, it’s Bill Mitchell, so imbecility is pretty much a given) - but what really stood out in perusing the wiki on the 2009 outbreak was the difference in how the government dealt with the problem.
And, oddly enough, under Obama, the Federal response seemed to eschew denialis and happy-talk, and embrace science and listening to (and enacting) the suggestion of public-health experts. Radicals…..

It’s hard to compare death rates when we have no idea of the true number of cases. The observed US death rate based on deaths/cases is about 3.3%, which is an overstatement because the actual total cases could be 5x or 10x the reported number.

Just a side note here. After getting H1N1 in 2009, I’ve made it a habit of getting a flu shot every year. I know it wouldn’t have helped then, but even a “normal flu” is a pain in the ass I’d rather avoid.

Charlie Pierce got me going on my favorite hobby horse, the postal service. So I sent a quick email to my US Rep, who is a conservative, but not insane, Republican. Sort of old school.

Dear Rep. LaHood,

I am writing you today to say that the most urgent thing you could be doing right now is protecting our USPS from the destruction that the Trump Administration is forcing it to undergo.

The USPS has a 91% approval rating, and was built into our constitution by our founding fathers. Many conservative areas are primarily rural, and they relay on the postal service even more intensely than more urban areas.

Many vets and older people, who also tend to be conservative, rely heavily on the postal service for their medications.

By attacking the USPS as he has done, Donald Trump is attacking your voters in an appalling and, in my opinion, un-constitutional way. For your own preservation, at the least, I urge you to work with Democrats to save the USPS from this horrible attack.

A constituent,

One big difference for the yokelspeople who don’t want to get all sciencey:

They said at the beginning of this that it only kills really old, immunocompromised, and people in really bad health.

That is true of the flu. That’s why the flu should be taken seriously. It’s also why we don’t shut the world down during flu season. It’s why we didn’t do this for H1N1.

There are also known working treatments for the flu when it gets really bad.

For COVID it seems to kill those people, and apparently randomly a certain percentage of other people with little or nothing wrong with them to begin with with so far as of yet no determined rhyme or reason, and it can be spread for a few days before you know you have it. THIS IS WHY *WAVES HANDS AROUND* ALL THIS SHIT.

I have had this argument many times with many people, usually about defense attorneys. As you obv know, our adversarial system requires zealous defenses and zealous prosecutions. If a candidate had been a defense attorney, of course they will end up defending some unpleasant people, but unless they themselves did something sleazy in their defending, what’s the problem? They were just doing their job as well as they could, and of course the same applies to prosecutors - they will probably end up, at some point, prosecuting sympathetic defendants.

Republicans don’t debate in any manner that resembles good faith, and Trump is the worst. The groups putting on the debates don’t moderate them well or at all and ask asininely stupid or insulting partisan leading questions.

There’s no reason for Joe Biden to bother. And he should say exactly why.

But in a more serious vein, for a while I supported capital punishment, “but only for the most heinous of crimes, and the most obviously guilty of murderers”, and that seemed like a defensible position - those people are broken, unfixable, and present an unacceptable risk to society for as long as they live.

Then I thought, “Okay, how do you write that into a law, so it’s really applied correctly?” and I realized it wasn’t possible, so I now oppose capital punishment.

so I just now come back from taking Otis to the groomer, and I started kvetching to my wife about all the unmasked idiots I saw. I honestly thought Los Angeles in general, and this part of the city, would do so much better, but I was seeing maybe 10% masked, and it has been like this for a while. (At least at the supermarket, pharmacy, and dispensary people are complying, and there are not too many other places I have to go these days.)
The rona is definitely an STD - Stupidity Transmitted Disease. (With a very unfortunate amount of collateral damage among the non-stupid.)
At least Otis is gonna be all shiny and clean in a couple of hours.

In other words, she’s normal. The people I know freaking out about this are fringe politically or don’t know Jack about politics. If you prioritize criminal justice reform, why not someone who has been a prosecutor and state AG? Harris would have more credibility dealing with prosecutors, attorneys general, & law enforcement in that arena.

Then I thought, “Okay, how do you write that into a law, so it’s really applied correctly?” and I realized it wasn’t possible, so I now oppose capital punishment.

It was the Innocence Project that turned me, as well.

They were able to fully exonerate almost 3% of the people on death row. Proved, to a scientific certainty, that they hadn’t done what they’d been convicted of.

There’s probably a similar number of innocents still on the row who they can’t help — the Innocence Project criteria for what cases they’ll work on includes that the conviction was based substantially on biological evidence, and that such evidence has been preserved well enough to be suitable for testing by laboratory methods that didn’t exist at the time of the original trial.

The only way to be absolutely certain to never execute an innocent… is to never execute anybody.

Biden is the first person to be a running mate to a PoC and to have one including a woman himself. I don’t want to hear how he’s a racist from people who seriously think the 1994 Crime Bill was designed to be racist.

The same bill that Bernie voted for, but gets a pass on because he only liked parts of it and they’re totally not the “racist” parts.

Not really. Trump’s ‘sir stories’ always include the element of the Manliest Man of All Time breaking down in tears in Trump’s tender embrace (yuk!).

1) nobody is ever going to confuse Brett Kavanaught with a Manliest Man of All Time, and 2) the Trump Pieta scene would also be a lie.

Go with that strategy. I mean, look at the wonders it’s done for Susan Collins.

Trump got so lucky running against Clinton in 2016. I am not attacking Clinton but there was a quarter century of hatred towards her that Trump didn’t have to do any work for. It’s different with Biden and Harris. Plus he can’t hide behind being an empty slate anymore.

It’s not that hard, and sites like pcpartpicker.com help you find compatible pieces. These days loading Windows is mostly just making a USB boot stick and… booting.

If you’re looking for really, *really* cheap then there are better options. But if you want a case that actually looks good, or any sort of modularity, or to build a serious gaming box, this is the way to go.

When mine broke last month, I tried to buy one, and the cheapest out there was worse than me building one.

Another difference is that back in 1994, there may have been a few more Republican Senators willing to curb one of their own.

The project to change from the Watergate-era GOP Senate caucus to the Trump-era GOP Senate caucus was a long-term effort of instilling absolute party over country into all Republican elected officials.

OT, but today someone posted something about “Nonce busters” trapping a local teacher/camp counselor as a pedophile on our community FB page. It was a dodgy screenshot of a one-sentence exchange with someone they say was a decoy they set.

I googled Nonce Busters and only found one page with Trump as the head in the Teletubbies sun and barely literate posts about “pedos” they had busted. Not much. Then found that “beating pedos” is a thing in the UK by National Front types; they use the word Nonce to refer to those they accuse of pedophilia. It has lead to the beatings and murders of innocent people.

But the reason I’m posting is that dozens of people have posted pitchfork-and-torch comments about rounding up and killing pedophiliacs. That’s why it was used in the Comet Pizza scam. It serves two purposes: first, it gets people worked up about a righteous cause—protecting children; and second, the accused are almost always associated with either Democratic policies (soft on pedos) or Democratic politicians. Ok, and a third is that no one wants to get involved due to fears that they will become targeted in witch hunts.

I would guess that this is the kind of thing Richard Blumenthal was so upset about when he left the hearing on Russian interference. I’d bet we’ll be seeing a lot more of the phrase “the real pandemic is pedophilia and sex trafficking.”

As a Californian, Kamala Harris being from California has nothing to do with me liking this decision.

In fact considering that I don’t particularly like most politicians in this state, regardless of party, by default being from my state would be a negative for me to begin with. In her case it isn’t particularly, but even if it was she has more than enough positives to outweigh it.

I was born in a neighboring county a few years before Harris. I have two birth certificates. The first one is a photostat slightly larger than a 3x5 card that I got in the 1970s and it has an attestation (seal and all!) attached to it. The second birth certificate I got in the mid-00s. It’s a computerized form with a scan of the photostat on it. Hopefully Harris doesn’t have a couple of misspelled names (mine and my mother’s maiden name). Her photostat probably was signed by her mother rather shortly after Harris was born, as opposed to mine, where my mother was apparently pestered in the ICU to “name the baby” several days after I was born.

Senate replacements don’t get special elections. Usually governor gets to appoint someone until the next federal election. So, if all goes right, Harris’s replacement will be up in 2022, which is when the term was set to expire anyway.

I wonder what Newsom’s list will look like for a potential Harris replacement. Alex Padilla is Secretary of State and Betty Yee is Controller, those are the only two statewide officials that are termed out of their offices in 2022. And of course, there’s a potential deep bench among the House, State Senate, and Assembly caucuses.

Alex Padilla is Secretary of State and Betty Yee is Controller, those are the only two statewide officials that are termed out of their offices in 2022. And of course, there’s a potential deep bench among the House, State Senate, and Assembly caucuses.

The Bernie bunch seems to be for Ro Khanna (Nina fucking Turner retweeted this one—seems to be her only response to the Kamala Harris news)

In my lifetime (born 1978), there have been:

9 of 11 presidential elections in which a member of the Bush and/or Clinton family ran for president/Vice-president.

3 of 11 presidential elections in which one major party’s ticket did not have at least one degree from an Ivy League University (1984, 2008, 2020). While every election has had at least one of the four major party nominees with an Ivy League degree.

Republicans currently lead the season series 6-4, but the next two match ups should have Democrats optimistic.

Harris’s selection moves California into a five way tie for third place as the home state of a nominee with 3 elections (Delaware, Massachusetts, Tennessee, New York). Texas leads the field with 6 elections; and Indiana is second with 4 (all VP nominations)

We’re celebrating Biden’s choice of @KamalaHarris today because of her leadership on immigrant justice and her unflagging support for our fight for equal treatment as farm workers.

I was lukewarm about Harris because I’m jonesing for Florida and GA electoral votes. If I’d seen the UFW support, I’d have been all-in.

I tell everyone - build your own.

How cheap is cheap? I put together my current PC with glass sided case, mobo, Ryzen 5 2400G (so no vid card but still runs my games at max detail) and 16 gb for about $400.

SoS Adams prefers not to, but it’s not a done deal yet.
From the end of the article:

While Adams has not released the full draft plan he sent Beshear, he told The Courier Journal it recommends a “generous” absentee voting policy that would let people request a mail-in absentee ballot if their age or a preexisting health condition makes them more vulnerable to COVID-19.

Anyone who lives with at-risk individuals or who works in the health care field also would be able to request mail-in ballots under his preliminary plan.

“My goal here is to protect people who are vulnerable based on age or health conditions,” Adams said. “They may not be literally unable to vote in person, but they shouldn’t because of their age or health status. And I leave that to the voter to make that sort of subjective decision.”

An AMD Ryzen 5 3400G would give higher performance and lower cost than an I5. Plus no need for a separate video card.

Been pondering kicking my machine up to 32 gb RAM but that’s because I sometimes get multiple VM’s & emulators running. 16 is perfect right now for 99% of users.

While I agree with M2 for a boot disk, I still prefer spinning rust for data storage (ebooks, movies, music… especially the music :D ).

Evening Lizardim. So. Kamala Harris. I imagine it has been hashed, rehashed, refried, and stuffed with cheese already, but what’s the overall consensus? As much as passes for one around these parts, anyway.

Everybody thinks that Biden/Harris should win the upcoming election.

Solaris 10u11 at the moment. I love my Blade 2500 Silver - I still need a 2nd cpu and to max out the ram but it still can do real work with a fairly recent copy of Firefox on it. Oracle needs to burn in Gehenna for what they did to Sun.

I have TME running SunOS 4.1.1 on my FreeBSD laptop for giggles.

My dream is a 3/150 with 16mb, a CG6, SCSI/Ethernet and a Symbolics UX400 VME Lisp Machine board. Oh, and some huge amount of disk for that era like a 4 or 9 gb SCSI :D

Oracle is like Trump: The company ruins EVERYTHING it touches!

Sun, Java, MySQL, Virtual Box, the list goes on.

Do you know what Oracle stands for? One Rich Asshole Called Larry Ellison! //

Virtualbox still seems to be ok, but his crap with Java is just annoying, and it definitely points out how little he know about the internet. Amazon’s Coretto is quickly becoming the Java build of choice at my company.

Wildly enthusiastic applause.

Left Twitter hates anyone not names Nina Turner, or Bernie Sanders. We knew that. Briebrie’s an obnoxious shit. We knew that, too. Walker Bragman, etc. For the tenth consecutive year I’ve been on Twitter, I am enraged because doxxing is still against the TOS, while Jack lets virtual Nazis use the service.

Well, I hardly notice the Java screws because I try to avoid it at all costs. Java - making fast machines slower than Windows. Bleah. Then I’m the kind that still prefers C & LISP.

I am completely not shocked. The right is famous for this.
So is the left. I knew a person on Twitter who was raised in a Cuban-American family and absorbed the culture, learned Spanish and everything.

Some asshole leftist challenged her, and demanded to see her DNA to determine if she was truly Cuban. Because race is an attribute if you have the “right” one. If extremists had their way, they’d create an ethnostate and a blood quantum for residence, in the “correct proportions”.

I’ve been reading old Klan books from the Internet Archive. The name for the location of a Klan meeting (a very ritualistic affair with that famous firey cross) is a Klavern.

I wonder if the Q-bits call their meeting place “Comets’ Pizza” or perhaps “Qwavern”? //

My response to that nonsense is pretty simple: Which water fountain would she have been allowed to use?

There’s your answer as to “Is she black enough?”

Yes, donating pocket change makes up for denying Black people rentals for years and calling for the summary execution of young Black men. Plus, didn’t know Katrina “Bullet Necklace” Pierson was still poking around the fringes of GOP politics.

Uh, Sun Microsystems killed Sun, not Oracle. Oracle merely gave it a zombie afterlife.

Aspire. Don’t assume you’ve got it, or ever will.

Yeah, I’m shit at political slogans.
