NJ has been talking municipal consolidations for generations, and what happens? We go in the other direction with more of them, and despite the fact that some cosolidations make sense (like eliminating the Bergen County Sheriff and/or consolidating dozens of local police departments into a countywide position), nothing will happen because of the fiefdoms established aren’t going to go away and people think that their services will suffer.

If the Bergen County sheriff office closed, the service could be rolled into the existing services (most often, you’ll find them supplementing Paramus cops around Garden State Plaza or patrolling the Bergen county parks - Van Saun or Overpeck, as well as the Bergen County jail). Annual savings could be considerable, without any loss of service. Will it happen? Not likely.
