Aside from the Blue Wave, and DJT’s campaigning, and the number of Senate seats Dems had to defend last night, there are some longer term trends at work as well.

It really wasn’t that long ago when the Dakotas sent 4 Democrats to the U.S. Senate. Not that those states would ever be considered liberal, but the partisan make up of their delegations (their at-large congressman were Dems not long ago, too) didn’t really match the partisanship of their voters, and now those two have become more aligned and it will be difficult I fear to regain seats like those.

If D’s don’t want to live in a particular lightly populated state, that’s what’s gonna happen
