It goes much deeper than that. As a gun sales lobby the NRA would back import bans and gun buy-back/destruction programs, controlling the supply and demand sides. They don’t.

That’s because they aren’t a lobby for an industry. They’re a lobby for a faith.

That faith is America, which is distinctly different from the American nation. That faith’s holy icons are firearms and the flag. It’s why the faithful have more and bigger of each. By doing so the faithful are demonstrating their faith.

It’s why after mass shootings they declare the solution is more firearms. If the faith spreads to everybody then evil will be destroyed.

This is why the gun control debate in America will go on forever. One side is arguing practical politics to deal with a problem while the other is arguing faith. They can’t even understand each other because they are actually talking about different things.
