Even without the nukes, Japan’s strategic situation in 1945 was totally untenable. They had already lost the war.

The nukes persuaded Japan to surrender, which spared all parties the bloodbath of an invasion of Japan.

The Japanese surrender also spared China, Korea and Indonesia a continuing bloodbath from the Japanese forces that were then rampaging.
