My state department sez I don’t need a birth certificate to renew my passport. You may need it if yours is more than 15 years out of date or it’s your first one. At least, that’s what the US Embassy says.

I got a passport with a copy of my birth certificate. I don’t have my real birth certificate, only a copy. In fact, I’ve never seen my real birth certificate.
